Step back in time to one of San Francisco’s most fascinating hidden histories — the Ingleside Racetrack 🐎✨
Opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1895, the Ingleside Racetrack sat just off Ocean Road (today’s Ocean Avenue), in what was then considered “out of town.” Surrounded by sand dunes, roadhouses, a dog track, and even a shooting range, it quickly became the ultimate destination for horse racing, gambling, and high society entertainment.
On opening day alone, as many as 12,000 spectators arrived by train and electric streetcars, filling the venue with music, dining, and excitement.
Despite its early success, changing laws and competition led to its decline. The final horse race ran on December 30, 1905.
By 1913, the racetrack was gone, replaced by Ingleside Terraces, a residential neighborhood. But the legacy lives on. Urbano Drive still follows the exact one-mile oval of the original track, making it one of the only places where you can walk the path of a historic racetrack hidden in plain sight.
Today, it’s quiet. Peaceful. But if you listen closely, you might still hear the echo of hooves racing down the homestretch.
