MRS. MYRTLE KIRKMAN, Spray, North Carolina, age 30, has two children: J.D. 8 years. Melroy 2 years. INCOME: Mrs. Kirkman's husband works in Spray mill doing part time work and averaging about $7 a week. HOME CONDITIONS: The family rents a home of 4 rooms at $8 a month but has been unable to meet the payments being over $200.00 behind. All of the husband's income goes for paying grocery bill, insurance (which amounts to $3 a month). Bag stringing, which she enjoys doing brings her about $6 a month and all goes in paying back rent. She states that this work will be necessary if she is to keep the family going. It never interferes with her house work or tending of the children...

Claiborne County, Tennessee, September 1928...

Frank M. Hohenberger was a photographer from Indiana. In 1928 he took this picture just outside of New Tazewell while traveling through. His notes for the picture are: "a picture of a mill near New Tazewell taken from the road"....

I would bet a lot of native Claiborne Countians know exactly where this was located. He took pictures of at least two other mills in Claiborne County as well.

Tazewell, Tennessee...

Tazewell Academy was built in 1846 largely under the direction of William Graham. It was recognized as a college in 1856. During the Civil War, the Confederate army used it as a hospital. The last session of classes for the school was completed in 1922.

The building no longer stands. It was located on the hill to the left as you start up Cedar Fork Road. It is said that the outlaw Frank James paid to watch the Ananias Honeycutt hanging from one of its second story windows in August 1875.
