๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ Meet Firefighter/Paramedic Dean Junell!

โฐ Deanโ€™s been proudly serving Burlington Fire for 7 years!

๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿš’ His journey into the fire service started when he was just 16 โ€” after a car accident with his sister, heโ€™ll never forget how calm and kind the responders were. That moment stuck with him and inspired him to do the same for others

๐Ÿก Before joining BFD, Dean worked with Central Skagit Medic One, and when the organization dissolved, he chose Burlington because of the culture and the people โ€” โ€œit just felt like home.โ€

๐Ÿ’—Originally from Tacoma, WA, Dean finds inspiration in his wife and family. Watching her kindness and strength as a mom pushes him to be better every day

โœˆ๏ธ๐ŸŒŽ Outside of work, Dean loves traveling with his wife and kids, exploring new places, and learning about different cultures

๐Ÿ‘Š๐ŸฝHis crew describes him as determined, a mentor, and hardworking, and we couldnโ€™t agree more

๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸFun fact: heโ€™s got 8 pets at home!

๐Ÿ“ข Big shoutout to Greg Glassie from Key Peninsula Fire for helping shape the firefighter and paramedic he is today!

Make it a family habit:
๐Ÿ•น๏ธ Practice your home escape plan
๐Ÿšจ Test smoke alarms
๐Ÿ’ก Unplug space heaters before bed
๐Ÿšช Close bedroom doors at night

Small habits = big safety.

Edited to note the Island County Sheriff's Office reduced the burn ban to a TYPE 1 on Oct. 3. Please visit their page for more details.

*************
Yes, we still have a burn ban.

Ending the burn ban is ultimately up to the Island County Sheriff's Office, but several factors go into that decision. And no, dew on the grass is not one of the factors.

Burn bans typically end after humidity rises, after vegetation absorbs (plenty of) moisture and becomes less dry, after measurable rain accumulates, and when regional/state firefighting resources are no longer busy with regional wildfires or other emergencies.

On September 23, 2016, our community changed forever.
We remember: Sarai Lara, Chuck Eagan, Belinda Galde, Beatrice Dotson, and Shayla Martin โ€” taken by senseless violence.

We hold close those injured, and we stand beside the first responders who answered the call โ€” many of whom still serve today. Their courage and resilience inspire us.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Every shift has been diligently training for YOU! A shift made sure the flowers and trees had enough to drink on this beautiful September afternoon!

When you see our aerial and ground monitors flowing thousands of gallons per minute, it might look like โ€œoverkillโ€โ€”but there are a few reasons firefighters train to move this much water at once:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Big Fire, Big Flow โ€“ Large commercial buildings, industrial sites, and fuel-fed fires can grow faster than handlines can handle. Master streams deliver overwhelming cooling power to knock it down.

๐Ÿข Reach & Coverage โ€“ Aerial monitors can put water where firefighters canโ€™t safely goโ€”rooftops, upper floors, or across large distances. Ground monitors blanket wide areas with steady flow.

โฑ๏ธ Speed & Safety โ€“ High GPM means we can gain control quicker, reducing risk for both firefighters and the community. Sometimes it takes a short blast of a lot of water to make the scene safe.

๐Ÿ’ง Perspective โ€“ While a single handline might flow 150โ€“200 GPM, this setup can easily exceed 2,000 GPM. Thatโ€™s like emptying an entire swimming pool in minutes.
