Let me tell you about these two: Bret Franks, left, is the rodeo coach at Clarendon College, and Weston Patterson is one of his protégés. They won the NIRA men’s team championship together in 2021, a team that included Cole Fanks, Brody Wells, Cash Wilson, Keene Justesen and Dawson Gleaves.
Bret is a three-time NFR bronc rider who has coached four national-title teams: Two at Clarendon and two at his alma mater, Oklahoma Panhandle State University. He has also mentored some of the greats, including individual national champions Wyatt Casper, Riggin Smith, Cole Franks, Weston Timberman and Wacey Schalla, the latter of whom finished a fantastic sophomore year as the reserve all-around champion. This year’s finale also featured ba****ck rider Sam Petersen, who won the NFR average.
Greatness happens because of coaches like Bret Franks. Mentorship is a valuable too.
