Bad news and good news. I will not be attending the Banned Books, Bites & Books in Peoria Heights this Saturday, June 6th.

However, in conversation with Stacy at Peoria Book Rack Gift Booktique instead of taking her generous refund offer due to the circumstances, my vendor fee is going toward buying books from the library for their Summer children's reading program!!!!

Peoria! I will see you in September and November. Who knows, maybe something will come up sooner?

If you were planning on seeing me there, please still go and if you do want a copy of the Thrive and Survive Zine where alln the proceeds go to groups on the front lines of DV/SA/Truama, reach out to me!

I've been listening to Roxette's Watercolors in the Rain with my morning coffee. At 55, after a minor stroke, I feel it differently.
Life rains on all of us. Trauma. Loss. Disability. Heartbreak. The sh*t we never planned for. We spend years wishing we could get the original painting back before the storm.
I have a zine I co-created in my hands and emails from readers of my books. Nobody contributed or connected because everything went according to plan. After the rain was made beautiful.
Shorter version of the coffee reflection.

I've been listening to Roxette's Watercolors in the Rain with my morning coffee.

At 55, after a minor stroke and a month spent slowing down whether I wanted to or not, I hear it differently than I did at 21.

"Seems I've been running all my life."

I've always been running. Sometimes away from something or towards it. Book 3, THRIVE, the next event, next article, next dream. There is always a next f*ckin thing.

Then one day a blood clot reminded me that time is not unlimited and neither am I.

I've been thinking about Ford and Cassie in my book series. Neither of them gets the life they thought they were going to have. That's true of almost every character in Hearts of Glass. Trauma, loss, disability, heartbreak, healing, found family. The picture changes. The victory ain't getting the original painting back. It's learning to love yourself and this life after the colors ran in the storm.

It's the same with the THRIVE & Survive Zine in my hands. Every poem, piece of art, and letter in those pages came from someone whose life got caught in the rain. Nobody contributed because everything went according to plan.

And standing here on the other side of a stroke, looking at a life that suddenly feels a little more precious and a little less endless, I think that's what this season is teaching me.

I can't stop the rain, but I can appreciate the colors while they are here and keep painting anew.

Stay totally awesome!

Stay true to you!

Thank you to everyone who came out to THRIVE today and to the incredible team that made it possible. Huge thanks to Allaina, John, Ashara, Guardian Angel Joliet, NOW, Beacon of Hope and Healing, Barnstormer Publishing, and the Fountaindale Library.
Together we raised funds for survivor focused organizations, built new partnerships with advocates on the front lines of DV and SA in the city my books are set in, and most importantly created a room filled with art, connection, healing, and hope.

We have one lovely human here so far. We are holding for a few minutes to start. But the human gets our best.
