Cumberland News
By John E. LePage, Jr.;

Friday August 1 – Sunday August 3, the annual Chandlersville Homecoming will take place throughout Chandlersville.

On Sunday August 3, church services at the Ark Spring Baptist Church will be canceled so members may attend the church service at the Chandlersville Homecoming.

This is a flashback 25 year to what was making the Cumberland News Items in July, 2000. Cumberland Village Council was discussing several matters including: electrical upgrades to the village building, the start of construction of a new pavilion in the village park, securing a location for the new water tower, repairs to equipment, and purchasing protective gear for village workers. In July 2000, the Spencer Township Trustees were discussing the problem of junk cars along some of the township roads.
On July 8, 2000, Cumberland Grange members and friends took a mystery trip to Eastern Muskingum County. Highlights included touring the Zane Grey-National Road Museum and shopping at the various businesses along U.S. 40 between Zanesville and New Concord. Later in the month Cumberland Grange hosted an open meeting with farmland protection and school funding among the topics discussed.
In July, 2000, Mr. & Mrs. Tabler from Route 1 and Phyllis Watson from Route 2 were winners in the Cumberland Post Office Mail Box Fix-Up Week contest. At the July, 2000 Freeland Valley Antique Power Show, Doug Hall and the Rev. T. Everett Leedom were honored during the Sunday morning worship service.

Noble County Hazard Mitigation Plan – Request for Public Participation
Disaster planning involves community input, and Noble County officials and residents will have an opportunity to participate on Tuesday, July 15. Erica Rossiter, EMA Director, has announced a chance for officials and residents to help identify potential threats and damages from storms and other disasters that strike Noble County, and to also identify ways to make those consequences less serious.
The EMA is in the process of updating the federally-required Hazard Mitigation Plan, and is requesting input. This plan discusses relevant topics like warning and notification systems, first responder training opportunities, and property protection. Hazards that are discussed include all types of flooding, severe summer storms, and blizzards, among many others.
Workshops to gather this input have been scheduled for Tuesday, July 15 at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. in the Village of Caldwell Council Chambers. There is no preparation for this workshop that is expected to last approximately two hours. Reservations are appreciated by calling the EMA at 740-732-7387 or by emailing Director Rossiter at [email protected].

Help for Noble County Veterans Struggling to Make Ends Meet

Are you struggling to pay your bills or buy groceries? Are you facing a utility disconnection, eviction notice or need help purchasing groceries? If you are an honorably discharged veteran or a veteran’s dependent, the Noble County Veteran Service Commission may be able to help.
Upon application, each county in Ohio is able to provide financial assistance to honorably discharged veterans, active-duty members, or their dependents (to include surviving spouses) who are a current resident of the county, with at least three months of current residency.
Applications for financial assistance are not public records. The Veteran Service Commission must conduct an interview with applicants for financial assistance, to discuss the application. Applications must be submitted seven working days prior to the regularly scheduled meeting of the Veterans Service Commission which is held the first Tuesday of each month.
The Noble County Veteran Service Commission does accept applications for assistance between regularly scheduled meetings for time critical assistance such as utility shut off notices, inadequate food supplies and rapid rehousing. We encourage applicants to attend the regularly scheduled meeting to prevent emergency circumstances by requesting assistance before utilities become delinquent or food becomes scarce. Do not hesitate to contact us, we are happy to assist. If you have any questions or need assistance completing an application, please stop in to see us or give us a call at 740-732-5567.
