Here’s a reminder of what was going on 25 years ago in the Cumberland Area in December 2000. A storm came through mid-month with 60 mph winds knocking out power for some, rearranging outdoor Christmas decorations and ushering in much colder weather.
In December 2000, the bulk of the Cumberland Village Council meeting centered on issues concerning the Water Tower Project or upgrades at the Water Plant. The Spencer Township Trustees were busy listening to concerns about the condition s of various roads and learned that the absentee vote count did not change the defeat of their road improvement levy.
The Claysville Homemakers had their annual Christmas Party and then fixed fruit baskets to take to members who were ill or shut-ins. At their meeting, the Cumberland-Spencer Homemakers heard a lesson on the safe use of oxygen at home, were told how Santa had changed over the years, studied Egypt, and had their annual Christmas gift exchange.
The are some other things that happened during December 2000 around Cumberland. The Buffalo Fork of Wills Creek was cleaned from SR 340 to Perry’s Den Road. The 4th annual Cumberland Christmas Parade took place with the Cumberland United Methodist Church received the trophy for best overall entry. It was announced that as soon as modifications could be made, there would be 24-hour access to lock boxes at the Cumberland Post. Several area churches had special services on Christmas Eve.
