Woman dies from two gunshots at Cade Lakes

Shooter flees, fatally shoots himself

A woman died on Wednesday after being shot twice at a home on Maple Drive at Cade Lakes, and the shooter left the scene, was stopped by responding law officers on State Highway 21 West and shot himself.
Both were transported to St. Joseph Health Burleson Hospital in Caldwell where they were pronounced dead, said Burleson County Sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Jackson.
Sheriff’s dispatch received a call at 12:02 p.m. that a family member had been shot, and the shooter had left the scene in a black Lincoln Navigator, still in possession of a firearm, Jackson said.
A westbound Burleson County sheriff’s deputy en route observed a vehicle matching that description headed east on State Highway 21 near County Road 105 and turned around to make contact, he said.
The driver voluntarily stopped and pulled over, he said.
Additional law officers arrived moments later, and the driver did not respond to commands to exit the vehicle, Jackson said.
The officers approached and found the driver slumped with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, he said.
It is unknown at this time exactly when during the traffic stop that the driver shot himself, he said.
At the crime scene, sheriff’s deputies found a woman with two gunshot wounds, one to the head and another to the chest, Jackson said.
An EMS ambulance crew arrived and began CPR and life-saving measures, and she was transported to the hospital, he said.
Jackson, in a news briefing, said he could not release the names of the man and woman at that time.
He added that family members had been at the sheriff’s office and had been notified.
Jackson had no comment at this time on how or if the man and woman were related, on what weapon was used in the shootings, if they were recovered or on any other evidence recovered at the scene.
Jackson said sheriff’s deputies, the DPS and Texas Rangers remained at the scene gathering evidence and continuing their investigation.
Jackson had no comment at this time on a motive for the shooting at the home and added that the investigation was still ongoing.
More details would be provided later by the sheriff’s office when the details can be confirmed, he said.
