Breaking News: 7 Died as Nigerian military aircraft crashes near Abuja airport

A Nigerian military aircraft has crashed near Abuja airport, killing all seven people on board, according to officials.

“First responders are at the scene. Sadly, all 7 personnel on board died in the crash,” Ibikunle Daramole, air force spokesman, said in a statement on Sunday.

The Beechcraft KingAir B350i aircraft crashed while returning to the Abuja airport after reporting engine failure en route to Minna, he said.

In scrubland just outside the airport perimeter, dozens of military and airport officials picked through the charred remnants of the aeroplane.

Fire engines and ambulances stood by. The smell of burning chemicals lingered in the air but no fire or smoke was visible, a witness told the Reuters news agency.

The air force said an investigation into the crash was under way.

“We should remain calm & wait for the outcome of investigation by the military,” Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika said in a Twitter post.

Witnesses at the site said the crash was terrifying.

“Everybody there was screaming full of disbelief,” Olugbenga Alaade, a government employee who said he has worked at the airport for nine years and who saw the crash, told The Associated Press news agency by phone.

Photos of the crash site show black clouds of smoke over parts of the shattered plane. Witnesses told local media they saw the plane struggling to turn around and get back to the airport before the plane exploded.

Heading: Apple may launch a MagSafe battery pack for iPhones

According to Bloomberg sources, Apple is working on a new MagSafe accessory for the iPhone 12. A magnetically attached battery pack would let iPhone users easily piggyback a battery pack to juice up the battery. The advantage with MagSafe is that magnets would easily align the charger pack to the back of the phone.

With the iPhone 12, Apple brought back the MagSafe name sake to use on a new ecosystem of iPhone accessories from wireless charging pads, to cases and wallets that are held to an iPhone by magnets. All four iPhone 12 variants support MagSafe.

According to the source, prototypes of the battery: “prototypes of the battery pack have a white rubber exterior.” In any case, Apple has not made this accessory public yet. We wonder if it will be the same material Apple used on the official Apple charging cases. There’s no word on how to recharge the battery pack, but a pack that could be thrown onto a MagSafe charger that simultaneously juices up the phone sounds like a cute idea.

Reportedly, the charging pack’s testing revealed some issues during internal testing. Although the magnets were strong enough to hold its own weight on the iPhone, software issues related to the charger are what may cause delays or even the ultimate scrapping of the idea entirely. The source indicated that the iPhone was improperly triggering a warning that the pack was overheating. One other issue had to do with using the pack to charge an iPhone interchangeably, with or without a case.

Apple has faced challenges with the 2017-announced AirPower Charging Mat that never made it to market. It eventually cancelled the product due to overheating of charging coils, since there needed to be large and small sized coils so that an Apple Watch could be charged.

We don’t doubt that Apple could make this product a possibility. The concern lies herein with how well the pack will be able to manage to deliver a fast enough charge without overheating in common scenarios like charging in a pocket.

Heading: Mark Zuckerberg reportedly said Facebook needs 'to inflict pain' on Apple

While it's no secret that tensions are growing between Apple and Facebook, a report by The Wall Street Journal has shed more light on just how acrimonious the rift has become. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg once reportedly told employees that "we need to inflict pain" on Apple in response to "extremely glib" comments made by his counterpart, Tim Cook.

In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, Cook was asked what he'd have done if he were running Facebook at the time. He said that he wouldn't have found himself in such a situation in the first place, and criticized Facebook for invading user privacy. He took another indirect shot at Facebook recently while slamming "rampant disinformation and conspiracy theories juiced by algorithms."

Although the two CEOs met in 2017 in an attempt to repair their fractured relationship, the encounter "resulted in a tense standoff," according to the WSJ. Since then, the rift between the companies has deepened, and an upcoming iOS privacy change is set to widen the chasm.

Last year, Apple announced that iOS apps would eventually need to ask users for permission to track them across other websites and apps using IDFA (ID For Advertisers) tags. As with the App Store privacy "nutrition labels" it rolled out in December, Apple has given developers some time to prepare for the change, which will be enabled when iOS 14.5 arrives this spring.

Facebook took issue with the policy update. It claimed that the move will hurt its revenue, as a large chunk of its business model depends on tracking user activity for ad targeting. Facebook has reportedly considered filing a lawsuit against Apple over alleged anticompetitive policies and it has offered to provide Epic Games with documents to aid that company's legal battle with Apple. The WSJ also reports that Facebook has been conducting "a campaign against Apple" with antitrust regulators and government figures.

This battle is playing out in public and private while Apple and Facebook are both under antitrust scrutiny. They also appear to be on a collision course to become more direct competitors. Their respective CEOs believe mixed reality and augmented reality represent the future of computing. Facebook, of course, has Oculus in its stable, while Apple is testing the waters of AR and details have been emerging about its mixed reality headsets.
