Crazy Horse – A Sacred Hero
Crazy Horse was born on the Republican River about 1845. He was killed at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, in 1877, so that he lived barely thirty-three years.
He was an uncommonly handsome man. While not the equal of Gall in magnificence and imposing stature, he was physically perfect, an Apollo in symmetry. Furthermore he was a true type of Indian refinement and grace. He was modest and courteous as Chief Joseph; the difference is that he was a born warrior, while Joseph was not. However, he was a gentle warrior, a true brave, who stood for the highest ideal of the Sioux [Lakota.] Notwithstanding all that biased historians have said of him, it is only fair to judge a man by the

The Birds Born from Fire
Long ago, before the world was filled with song, the earth lay in silence. The forests stood still, the rivers moved without voice, and the people felt alone. They prayed to the Great Spirit for music to lift their hearts and guide their days.
The Great Spirit answered with a fire — a sacred flame that burned in the heart of a canyon. From this fire, sparks began to rise, and each spark took wing, transforming into a bird. Some became blue as the twilight sky, some golden as the sun, some white as snow, and some black as midnight. Together, they filled the heavens with color.
When the birds opened their beaks, music poured forth. The rivers danced to the loon’s call, the dawn broke to the thrush’s song, and the eagle’s cry carried prayers to the Creator. Each bird carried a gift: courage, joy, peace, or wisdom, given freely to the world.
The people watched in awe as the birds circled upward in a spiral, carrying the fire of life into the skies. From that day forward, the world was never silent again — every morning the people woke to song, and every evening the birds returned to rest by the fire of the sunset.

Billy Walkabout: A Warrior’s Spirit
Born March 31, 1949, Billy Walkabout of the Cherokee Nation is remembered as the most decorated Native American soldier of the Vietnam War.
As a young Army Ranger with the 101st Airborne Division, he showed extraordinary courage during a fierce battle near Huế in 1968—fighting through wounds, saving his comrades, and holding the line under relentless fire. For his valor, he earned some of the nation’s highest honors, including the Distinguished Service Cross, multiple Silver and Bronze Stars, and six Purple Hearts.
Even after the war, he carried the heavy cost of service, suffering from Agent Orange exposure until his passing in 2007. His legacy lives on in the portrait Walkabout: A Warrior’s Spirit by Cherokee artist Talmadge Davis, and in the memory of all who honor his sacrifice.
A true warrior—Cherokee, soldier, hero.

Spirit of the Painted Plains
Upon the wind-swept golden ground,
Where ancient songs still circle ’round,
The painted horse, both fierce and free,
Carries the whispers of the prairie sea.
Feathers sway with each bold stride,
Stories of elders at her side,
Her eyes hold moons, both old and bright,
Guiding her kin through the sacred night.
Blood-red marks and beads of blue,
Echo a people brave and true,
Each step a prayer, each breath a flame,
Keeping alive their honored name.
Oh spirit horse, forever roam,
Across the sky, across the loam,
A guardian born of earth and rain,

Cherokee Women – Strength, Power, and Influence

In traditional Cherokee society, women held remarkable authority. A woman could divorce her husband simply by placing his belongings outside the home. Cherokee culture was matrilineal, meaning family lines, clan membership, and property passed through the mother.

Women weren’t just caretakers; they were active leaders, participating in council meetings and shaping tribal decisions. Some even earned the title of War Woman for their courage in battle.

This system placed women at the heart of both family and society, fostering respect, resilience, and a lasting legacy of empowerment in Cherokee life.
