You didn’t have to know her to feel what she stood for.
Mohanmala, the gentle giant of Kaziranga, has passed away at an estimated age of 90. She wasn’t famous for tricks or show. She was known for work, courage, and a calm that steadied people in hard moments.
For decades, she helped rangers patrol deep grasslands where poachers hid. She carried them through places even boats couldn’t reach. Her presence alone made dangerous nights feel a little safer.
When the Brahmaputra rose and camps were cut off, Mohanmala waded through floodwater with supplies on her back. Food. Medicine. Hope. She ferried the sick to safety and brought them home again when they healed.
Mahouts say she was an excellent swimmer. Loyal. Patient. Fearless when it counted. She outlived many of the people who loved and cared for her, and she kept showing up for those who needed her.
She retired years ago, but the park never stopped being her family. Today they mourn a colleague, not just an elephant. A quiet hero who turned simple strength into a lifeline for others.
If you’ve ever believed kindness can be powerful, remember her name. Mohanmala showed us what that looks like.
