My buddy Mike is still up in Nome this week and sent me this incredible sunset shot from the tundra. Out here, every scene tells a story, antlers on the ground, rusted relics from the old mining days, and skies that burn like fire over the hills.
This is Anvil Creek country, the very place where the Three Lucky Swedes — Jafet Lindeberg, Erik Lindblom, and John Brynteson — struck gold in 1898 and changed Nome forever. That one discovery sparked the Nome Gold Rush, brought thousands of prospectors, and carved out a history still felt in the land today.
We were fortunate to spend time with AKAU Alaska Gold & Resort, which sits right on this historic ground. They keep that legacy alive by giving people the chance to experience it firsthand, to detect, pan, sluice, and walk the same valleys where dreams were made over a century ago.
The gold might have been the draw, but it’s sunsets like this that remind you why this land has a pull all its own. Nome is rugged, wild, and unforgettable, a place where past and present meet under skies painted with fire.
