The hardest part wasn’t deciding on our first winery to visit, it was getting everyone’s schedules lined up.

After plenty of messages in the group chat, we finally made our first girls’ day winery trip a reality at Holtkamp Winery and Vineyards

The wine was wonderful, and the scenery was beautiful.

Holtkamp is located in Sunman, IN and grows 17 different grape varieties across its 6.5-acre estate vineyard, which means there’s no shortage of wines to taste and enjoy.

My personal fave wine was the Vidal Blanc and Traminette.

We’re still deciding on a name for our winery crew, but the goal is to visit wineries across Indiana (and maybe beyond), support local wineries, and make some memories one trip at a time.

We were missing several gals from the group on this trip, but hopefully we can get them in on the next one!

One winery down, plenty more to go. Where should we go next? 🍷

If you haven’t been to Madison, you simply must add it to the list. I plan to go back in a few weeks and get more content downtown. It’s so lovely!

I can definitely picture having a few glasses of wine and walking around town taking in the sights.

Great wine isn't enough anymore.

This was my biggest takeaway from the that I attended last month with

It's not about the wine in the glass. Brittany Gibson who has served as Executive Director of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail since 2018, spoke about this at length, and I heard it echoed by other speakers, as well.

It's about the experience around the wine and how you make your guests feel from the moment they walk through your door.

We have to create experiences people want to keep coming back for. There is something really powerful about creating a space where people can slow down, be in community, and actually talk to each other (especially over a great glass of wine 😉).

Low to non-alcoholic wines are also proving to be a huge opportunity. People still want to belong and be a part of what's happening at the winery; they just may not want the alcohol.

Whether that means having one glass and switching to something non-alcoholic, or skipping it altogether, some of the wineries that added these options are seeing them become some of their best sellers.

A few things came up that I see across small businesses all the time, not just in the wine industry.

1. Storytelling is IMPORTANT! It helps guests feel something, remember you, and want to come back.

2. So many businesses are doing amazing things. But their marketing hasn't caught up yet, and they have a huge opportunity to change that.

One speaker asked the room how many had set aside a marketing budget or had someone handling it for them. Three hands went up.

Most businesses start because they want to bring something to the world or solve a problem, and then the marketing falls by the wayside or becomes an afterthought.

You don’t want to be the best-kept secret.

Overall, I had a fantastic time. Being in a room full of people who are passionate about what they're doing, whether you're sitting with winemakers who have been in business for 50+ years or those who are just building their tasting room, is really special.
