🐎 The only significant Civil War battle fought on Ohio soil happened in a corn bottom in Meigs County, and most people from Ohio have never heard of it.

In the summer of 1863, Confederate cavalry under John Hunt Morgan crossed into Indiana and then swung east across southern Ohio, riding hundreds of miles through towns that had never seen a soldier. Panic traveled ahead of them. Militia turned out from every county along the route. On July 19, Union forces and gunboats on the Ohio River caught up with Morgan's exhausted column near Buffington Island, and several hundred of his men were captured trying to get back across into West Virginia.

Morgan slipped away that day with a few hundred riders and kept going northeast until he was finally taken near West Point in Columbiana County, the farthest north any Confederate force ever reached. There is a small state memorial at Buffington Island now, a few acres and a marker out in farm country. It is quiet in a way that makes the whole thing hard to picture. 🌾
