“Through our shared community service, prayer and ongoing dialogue, both communities have built bridges to one another that contribute to a wider and more inclusive and respectful society."

The Catholic and Jewish communities of South Jersey gathered Oct. 28, which was 60 years to the day of the release of “Nostra Aetate” (In Our Time), to celebrate the groundbreaking Church document that revolutionized Catholic-Jewish relations.

“Money is not the goal — it’s a tool.”

When we remember that our finances can serve as instruments for good, we stay grounded in faith and purpose.

Recently, the Catholic Star Herald spoke with John Napolitano, financial planner and member of the Diocese of Camden’s Catholic Business Network of South Jersey, about how faith can guide the way we use our resources to make a positive impact — locally, nationally, and abroad.

John, a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine, shares insights on aligning faith and finances for the greater good.

Fresh off his return from Italy, Bishop Joseph Williams celebrated Mass this morning with the school community at Holy Spirit High School, Absecon.

During his homily, Bishop Williams shared some highlights of his pilgrimage to Rome, which he led with a delegation of diocesan leaders to take part in the worldwide synodal process. The pilgrimage included a visit to Assisi and the burial site of Saint Carlo Acutis. The Bishop shared stories about the recently canonized saint, including the teen’s love for technology, the Eucharist and the Mass. Bishop Williams implored the students to attend Mass regularly, starting this Sunday, asking, “Why not?”

After the Mass, Bishop Williams joined a select group of juniors and seniors as well as members of the administration and school advisory board for a light lunch and lively conversation. He also asked the students about the start of the school year, fall sports and their plans for the future.

Before heading back to class, the attending students presented Bishop Williams with a special Spartan-inspired gift, including a Holy Spirit High School scarf and sweatshirt.

Members of the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal, clergy and guests gathered at Saint Michael Church, Parish of Saint Monica, this morning in Atlantic City to remember Mother Lucille Cutrone, CFR.

Mother Lucille, founding member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal, passed away a year ago, on Oct. 27, 2024, at age 77. She was instrumental in working with Bishop Dennis Sullivan to get the CFR sisters established in Atlantic City.

In his homily, Bishop Sullivan shared a few memories of his dear friend, including one when they both visited the Saint Joseph Winter Shelter. He noted Sister Lucille’s pride and joy in the success of the Atlantic City mission – and in her sisters who staffed it.

“I remember saying to her, ‘Mother, it was a gamble for you to open a mission in the city of gambling,’” Bishop Sullivan said. “She smiled and said, ‘Yes, it was. But in Atlantic City, we hit the jackpot.’”

That sentiment was shared by all who spoke of Mother Lucille – that they hit the jackpot in knowing and learning from her.

Father Robert Hughes, pastor of the Parish of Saint Monica, concelebrated the Mass.

Our Diocese of Camden delegation concluded their Synod Jubilee pilgrimage to Italy with a day of prayer and reflection in Assisi — the home of Saints Francis, Clare, and Carlo Acutis.

The day began with a powerful reflection from Msgr. Anthony Figueiredo, Director of International Affairs for the Diocese of Assisi, who also oversees the worldwide pilgrimage of Saint Carlo Acutis’ relics. At the conclusion of his talk, each member of our diocesan leadership team received a blessing with a holy relic of Saint Carlo.

Bishop Joseph Williams and Father Jon Thomas then celebrated Mass at Casa Papa Giovanni, one of the retreat houses of the Diocese of Assisi and a special place associated with Saint Carlo’s devotion.

Following Mass, the delegation visited the Sanctuary of the Spoliation inside the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Saint Carlo’s tomb invites pilgrims from around the world to encounter his witness of holiness in the digital age.

The pilgrimage concluded at the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis, where the group prayed at the tomb of Saint Francis, and at the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, where they visited the Porziuncola, the small chapel that became the heart of Franciscan spirituality.

On this week’s episode, Father Tom Piro and Father Stephen Robbins – who are both associate directors for the Office of Vocations talk about the Diocese of Camden’s newest initiative: “Called by Name.”

“God wants to invite you to help build up His Kingdom,” the priests tell host Jen Mauro joined by our Talking Saints host and Catholic Star Herald reporter, Peter Sanchez.

This November, every parishioner is being asked to prayerfully consider young men, from high school through age 39, who show the qualities of a good priest. On the weekend of Nov. 1-2, you’ll find “Called by Name” cards in the church pews. Take one home, or after Mass, write down the name of a young man you think could make a good priest. Return the card to the collection basket. The vocations team will do the rest!

Learn more about the program and see how you can participate at camdenpriest.org/cbn.
