As more and more “third places” — like malls and cafés that have historically been teen after-school hotspots — disappear, teens have fewer and fewer options for places to go after school. It can be difficult to find quiet, neutral locations to hang out or do schoolwork, which creates less community and more isolation.

Belfast is creating a space where teens can be teens.

When Hurricane Melissa tore across Jamaica on Oct. 28, it left behind one of the worst humanitarian crises in the island’s history. The Category 5 storm flattened homes, washed out roads, severed communications, and displaced hundreds of thousands of families. Many of the hardest-hit communities were the same ones that, year after year, send dozens of men to Maine to work the fields at Beth’s Farm Market in Warren. Those men, longtime seasonal neighbors in the Union/Warren area, suddenly found themselves thousands of miles from home as their families faced staggering loss. In Union, one small church decided that distance didn’t lessen the obligation to help.

Dozens of people flocked to Balsam Hill Farm in Hope on Friday and Saturday to buy Christmas trees and Maine-made wreaths during the farm's opening weekend. While precut trees were available, many customers opted to cut their own. Located on Barrett Hill Road, the farm follows no-spray and other natural growing practices.

“Desiring to simplify” his life, E.B. White famously left New York City for Maine in 1938. From his saltwater farm in Brooklin, he continued to write prolifically — for The New Yorker and Harper’s and elsewhere — and published books, too, some (ostensibly) for children. He also became a gentleman farmer, as concerned with daily chores as world affairs. Still, White was from away. Like me.

E.B. White gives us something for every season in life.
