You met Alexy, Nurse, and the young pouncer, Mládà, in Shay The Brave.

Now journey with them to Dorp House, an orphanage in distant Indusdorp where Shay's da (manor lord of Oldenshire) sends Alexy to live. But Dorp House isn't the school Da thinks it is; it's a dismal tannery run by greedy Mr. Brisket and his towering one-eyed custodian, Crankhouser.

Can Nurse and the new headmaster Da hired-persnickety Mr. Perrytwinkle-save forty hungry orphans from a life of dirt and drudgery? Among them is Susanna, Alexy's new best friend, and her two brothers.

What can one voiceless lad like Alexy do?

Things grow worse when Crankhouser sells Mládà to Farmageddon to be put on display with other captured citizens of Ailouros, the forest kingdom ally of Oldenshire, back home.
And who, oh who, is that mysterious man in the prison tower who begs Alexy's help?

If only Shay's da or Talí (ruler of Ailouros and Mládà father) knew what was happening in Indusdorp!

This novel sets up a fascinating premise: Death herself is not evil, or sinister, decidedly not a looming, skeletal figure in a black cloak wielding a large, ferocious sickle. Death is an entity just doing her job, according to a pre-ordained list (a rather unsettling concept, but one with which we are all familiar). Right down to her enjoying her coffee before launching into her day.

Mr. Elmquist cleverly and seamlessly humanizes this figure. Along the way he paints a picture of the contentious and - dare I say, competitive - relationship Death has with another legendary figure: Lucifer. It’s all evocative of a Neil Gaiman book, and that is a good thing.

There are some nice twists along the way, as well, in this engaging tale. It was a very entertaining, quick read!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

From start to finish, “Among the Whisperings” kept me wondering where the story would go next. While I am familiar with “The Great Gatsby,” it has been a long time since I last read the novel. This felt familiar but completely new at the same time. The characters were engaging, and the book was incredibly hard to put down! The twist at the end absolutely dropped my jaw, and suddenly everything fell into place.
This doesn’t feel like a debut story. This feels like a work by an incredibly seasoned author. I absolutely loved every minute and cannot wait for more.
