Laparoscopic vs open cholecystectomy: Debating methods for patients with gallbladder disease. Roy and colleagues identify the differences between the two methods by comparing primary and secondary outcomes. Primary outcomes include mortality, while secondary outcomes include a range of patient complications. The results show that laparoscopic cholecystectomy had better patient outcomes in comparison with open cholecystectomy. This study highlights different methods to treating gallbladder disease and reducing negative patient outcomes during the procedure.

Pancreatic Volume and Fat Content in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Study Using Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography (CECT). Devadiga and colleagues compared pancreatic volume and fat content between normal subjects and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients using CECT. T2DM patients had significantly lower pancreatic parenchymal volume and higher pancreatic fat volume. Longer T2DM duration correlated with these changes, suggesting they may contribute to diabetes onset and progression.

Plastic Surgery vs. Orthopedic Surgery? Hand surgery has become well-established in recent years. Alnaim and colleagues designed a self-administered questionnaire addressing participants’ preference for plastic versus orthopedic surgeons for various hand-related issues. A total of 716 participants responded, who generally seemed more comfortable with orthopedic surgeons assuming their care. Only 24.4% of participants were aware that plastic surgeons could perform hand surgery. This highlights an increased need for public education regarding the capabilities of surgeons.
