At nearly $4 a linear foot, many may question the value of professionally built trail systems. Their great worth, however, lies not only in their environmental sustainability, but also in their philosophical complexity.

Saturday, September 30th, is National Public Lands Day. This is a fee-free day for all federal public lands and many state parks. Did you know that over 30% of land in the US is public land? This includes our neighborhood parks, mountain parks, state & federal lands.

We encourage you to take the day to visit and enjoy our parks and public lands. As you do so, please celebrate and respect the area and other visitors by placing all trash in any provided receptacles or by packing it out. Please also pick up any pet waste and dispose of it properly. Litter and pet waste impact our quality of life and enjoyment of our natural landscapes. Both litter and pet waste can eventually end up in our waterways where it impacts water quality, humans and wildlife.

Cañon City sits at the mouth of the Royal Gorge, where over millions of years the Arkansas River has carved a dramatic canyon that looks just as imposing from the top along its famous bridge as it does from a raft in the canyon’s exhilarating whitewater rapids. If you don’t quite feel up to plunging...

CCPD to Begin Leash Law Enforcement

The Canon City Police Department wants to remind you that it is unlawful for the owner of any dog to permit their dog to run at large. When you are out walking with your dog, he or she needs to be on a leash, no more than 10 feet in length. Failure to follow this law could result in a municipal summons for Running at Large Prohibited, which is a Misdemeanor offense.

It is also unlawful not to pick up your dog’s waste, upon any street, alley, sidewalk, or public grounds. Failure to follow this law could result in a municipal summons for Unlawful Acts.

Beginning now, through May 31st, Canon City Police Officers and Community Service Officers will be issuing written warnings for violations of these statutes. Starting June 1st, violators will be issued municipal summonses for violations.
