Do you remember this poem?
Mother to Son
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now—
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
I'm not saying that life has been hard like growing up in slavery hard…quite the contrary….life has been good. God has been Good and life has been different but good.
Actually some of the places that we've traveled to and some of the experiences that we've had causes some to marvel.
One thread that has run through the fabric of my life is my concern and love of the poor, the underserved people. For the past 50 years, I've found myself serving them in some way. Whether giving them clothing or arranging a food drive or preparing them a meal. Since I was a teenager I've been concerned about their plight. I inherited this care and concern from my parents who were always giving and caring for someone. This is one of the greatest legacies that they left me.
My point is….our lives are all different from each other. A full life satisfied life looks different for every person. Live your life to the fullest.
