The 2026 New York State legislative session wrapped up last week in Albany.

Over the past five months, lawmakers passed a slew of laws, including a $277 billion budget that came in weeks past deadline.

The measures passed include a crackdown on car insurance rate hikes and expanded childcare funding. The budget also softens the stateโ€™s climate change laws and limits local police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

In their final days at the Capitol, state lawmakers passed more legislation on congressional redistricting and data center moratorium.

The New York Public News Network's Albany reporter Jimmy Vielkind told Northern Light the session was light compared to past years because budget negotiations took up so much time.

He said lawmakers did include utility rebate checks in the state budget, but didn't make progress on ways to help New Yorkers who will lose their health insurance.

"State officials estimate [rebate checks] will go to more than 8 million New Yorkers. [It] represents a lot of spending that lawmakers didn't do, items that they didn't spend that money on. The biggest one to me is some kind of a program to help hundreds of thousands of people whose state-backed health insurance is expiring this month. Extending that and extending their coverage might have cost around $700 million, though the exact estimate's not clear," Vielkind said.

"Deer and Grouse," by Fred Burns, Long Lake, NY. Oil on canvas. Fred's work is on display at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake until June 24th. This piece was brought to NCPR by Fred's great-granddaughter, Anna Dechene. "Fred Burns was born in 1892 in Poland and immigrated to the US when he was 2 years old. His parents died, and he was placed in an orphanage. He came to Long Lake at 17, and later enlisted in the US army and served in World War I. After his service, he taught himself how to paint and build houses, and then in his 70s he began to build guide boats, as he lamented the craft had died." โ˜€๏ธ In the Adirondack High Peaks on Saturday, the sun will rise at 5:11 am and set at 8:40 pm.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Itโ€™s going to be quite warm through the weekend. Be sure to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks.

โ›ˆ๏ธ High Peaks summit temperatures are expected to be near 60 through the weekend, and some rain is expected later Sunday. Some water crossings may be difficult after storms expected today, so plan alternative routes. Itโ€™s better to wait out water rises if you have to, rather than attempt what may be a dangerous crossing.

๐Ÿ›ถ Otherwise, waters are around most of the Adirondack Park at near normal levels for this time of year, though in the southwestern part of the Adirondacks they are much lower than normal, which could make low water paddles difficult there.

๐ŸŒŠ Aside from the dam releases, the Hudson River is expected to be about 3 feet on the gauge in North Creek. At Peircefield, the Raquette River is forecast to be about 5.5 feet. Lake Champlain has fallen to about 96.3 feet, and water temperatures there are now mostly in the mid-60s. Mirror Lake water temperature is now around 70 degrees.

๐Ÿšง In the Ferris Lake Wild Forest, the bridge over North Creek toward Waters Mill Pond is out and will require fording the creek. In the High Peaks, Avalanche Pass remains closed after the slide about a year ago.

๐Ÿ‘พ And remember that ticks are very active this year โ€“ take precautions, and be sure to check yourself after a day outside.
