Zimbabwean molecular biologist Tapiwa Guzha was recognised on Saturday, 13 December 2025, for redefining ice cream through African food heritage, after creating more than 600 unique flavours inspired by indigenous ingredients.

Guzha, the founder of Tapi Tapi Ice Cream in Cape Town, had transitioned from molecular biology into culinary innovation, combining scientific experimentation with cultural storytelling. His creations drew on traditional African ingredients such as baobab, tamarind, masawu fruit, hibiscus, bitter leaf, and Mphepho, moving away from conventional Western flavour profiles.

The shop, located in Observatory, had become a cultural gathering point, where each flavour reflected African history, rituals, and memory. Media coverage highlighted Guzha’s work as part of a broader effort to reclaim and elevate African cuisine on the global stage.

By December 2025, Guzha’s achievement was widely cited as an example of African-led innovation in gastronomy, illustrating how science and tradition could intersect to produce globally relevant culinary ideas.

The Mall of Zimbabwe, a WestProp Holdings project valued at over US$100 million, is set to become the country’s largest retail investment, with construction expected to begin in early 2026.

The development will offer about 90,000 square metres of retail space and host over 150 local and international brands. It is expected to create significant employment opportunities and strengthen investor confidence while modernising Zimbabwe’s retail landscape.
