We honor Barbara Dull Knife for being the Unci (grandmother) of our community protecting and caring for countless children. She has followed the teachings of her own grandparents through her many years of work in child welfare and as a Victim Witness Advocate. Barbara founded Wakanyeja Gluwitayan Otipi—Gathering Our Children Home in 2017 (the only one on Pine Ridge Reservation) to ensure that there would be a safe, caring place for children, ages 0-12, who were experiencing a family crisis. At the Children’s Home both English and Lakota are spoken, traditions are taught and our cultural ceremonies are embraced. Here, Barbara created an environment where children can be safe, cared for and supported while healing; each one developing to their full potential, learning our Lakota teachings and way of life.
Barbara says that "Sacred being starts with the moment of creation of a life. My work with our Lakota children and their families is situated in every part of the sacred cycle of life." Barbara Dull Knife has truly dedicated herself to caring and nurturing the “Next Seven Generations of Lakota Peoples”.
