In a four-way race for the presidency, the American people elected Abraham Lincoln to the nation's top office on November 6, 1860.

Lincoln was the first Republican to win the White House, defeating a Democratic Party that had split between North and South and a Constitutional Union Party running on the single issue of avoiding secession.

Lincoln, who did not even appear on the ballot in many Southern states, carried 39.7% of the vote and all of the Northern states.
