In a private room on the third floor of The Cubby Bear – a Chicago bar founded by SIU alumnus Gus G. Loukas – fans from both sides of a historical rivalry sat within banter distance of each other as the SIU Alumni Association hosted its annual Southern Illinois University Day at Wrigley Field on Saturday, July 5.

The event, which has been going on for nearly 50 years, started with a pre-game celebration filled with food, drinks and special announcements, including the news that the SIU Alumni Association will again shut down the Strip for a Halloween celebration this year.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a photo of an unknown suspect that they claim is responsible for the defacement of the Paul Simon Federal Building that allegedly occurred on the evening of Tuesday, June 10 in Carbondale.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction.

The U.S. Department of Justice launched the investigation on Wednesday, June 11, just a day after a protest and march was held in Carbondale, during which they allege the defacement took place.

A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois accused “criminals” of “targeted vandalism” during the protest, but it is unclear what kind of vandalism occurred.

Protesters in Carbondale told the Daily Egyptian that last week’s protests were held “because the fascist overreach of the federal government, which has been sn*******ng for a long time now, has reached a breaking point.”

Aside from the newly released photo of a suspect, the office will not release any further information while the investigation is ongoing.

Colorful signs and colorful language lit up the Strip in Carbondale on Saturday as thousands lined the sidewalks from Mill to Main Street, marching to the beat of snare drums, tubas and the honks of passersby.

Demonstrators gathered in both celebration of Pride Month and in protest of President Donald Trump, who was simultaneously hosting his own parade in Washington, D.C.

Just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday June 10, a group of nearly 50 protesters marched from the corner of Mill Street and Illinois Avenue to the Paul Simon Federal Building in Carbondale to voice their concerns about an array of issues ongoing in the United States.

The Carbondale Police Department was on scene for the entirety of the protest. Despite the constant police presence, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois issued a press release on Wednesday, June 11 stating that the protesters will be prosecuted for vandalism to federal property to the fullest extent of the law.

Lauren Barry Duncan, Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Illinois, told the DE that there are no more details available concerning the alleged damage that was done to the federal building during the protest on Tuesday. The office will not release any further information while the investigation is ongoing.

When the investigation was launched, the DE and other members of the local media returned to the scene to see if any damage had been done overnight. None was found.
