Concern is spreading in Rockville Centre as many mature trees are being cut down to make way for infrastructure upgrades.

The tree removal is part of the village’s road improvement program, which officials say requires clearing shallow-rooted trees that encroach on sidewalks and water lines. For many residents, however, the sudden loss of decades-old trees has been a shock.

“Those trees have to be removed, and people have to remember, too, that … infrastructure kind of evolved as these trees were still in their place,” Catie Carter, vice president of the Rockville Centre Civic Association, said. “You know, some of the trees are decades and decades old, so infrastructure has changed throughout the years.”
