In the wake of Hurricane Melissa — a devastating Category 5 storm that tore through Jamaica with 250 mph gusts and 185 mph sustained winds — Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages joined community leaders, and members of the True Tribute Organization to launch an urgent supply and fundraising campaign for families impacted by the storm.

“The storm was strong — but the people of the Caribbean are even stronger,” Solages said. “We as Americans have roots all throughout the world, and we have to give water to those roots so that they bear good fruit. When Haiti was in need, Jamaica was there — no matter who it is, we’re all in this together and we’re going to do everything we can to encourage aid.”

🌎 Reflecting on Valley Stream’s Indigenous Roots

As communities across the country marked Indigenous Peoples’ Day this month, Valley Stream took a closer look at the stories and histories woven into its own landscape.

Archaeological findings, place names, and oral histories all point to a deep Indigenous presence that shaped the region long before European settlement.

Though time and development have erased many visible signs, the echoes of this heritage remain in the land, the language, and the local memory. Valley Stream Historical Society Trustee Amy Bentley and others continue working to preserve and share these stories, ensuring they are not forgotten. 🍃

Commemorating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Valley Stream reflects on its early Native history — from Hook Creek and Hungry Harbor to the Telewana monument.

Community members gathered at Arthur J. Hendrickson Park on Oct. 5, for the Annual Dr. Elsy Mecklembourg-Guibert Memorial Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and Run, hosted by District 22 Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages.

The annual event aims to honor survivors, remember those who have been lost, and raise awareness about the importance of early detection and continued research in the fight against breast cancer.

“Before, it used to be a death sentence, but now, with advanced technology, we have more and more people surviving this battle, but there’s so much more research that needs to be done,” Assemblywoman Solages said. “There’s so much more work that needs to be done, and there’s also a lot of education so that we can prevent any other person from dying from this.”
