Ilana Greenberg, 17, broke the Guinness World Record for Most Decimal Places of Pi Recited in One Minute on Aug. 3, rapidly repeating from memory 426 digits, in the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library’s courtyard.

“I’ve always loved math and the STEM subjects” — science, technology and engineering as well as math — and particularly during the pandemic, I got a renewed interest in it,” Greenberg said. “I had a lot of extra time on my hands, so I decided, as a personal challenge, to start memorizing the digits of pi” — the mathematical ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
