As families across New York observe Older Americans Month this May, conversations about aging, caregiving and financial security are becoming more urgent than ever. Yet for many households, discussions about estate planning and long-term care remain uncomfortable, postponed until a crisis forces decisions to the surface.

For husband-and-wife attorneys Rob and Sharon Hoskins of Hoskins Life & Legacy Planning, P.C., those difficult conversations are exactly the ones families need to start having now โ€” before illness, incapacity or loss creates confusion and conflict.

๐ŸŒŠ South High School Receives $850,000 for Shoreline Stabilization Project

An $850,000 federal funding award will help Valley Stream South High School move forward with a long-planned shoreline stabilization project designed to stop worsening erosion along Valley Stream Creek that school officials say threatens athletic facilities, maintenance buildings and other campus infrastructure.

The funding, secured through the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations process by Rep. Laura Gillen, will support repairs along the northern edge of the campus, where years of erosion and storm damage have steadily narrowed the distance between the creek and school property.

The project is intended to protect areas including the track and football field, scoreboard, north parking lot and storage buildings from future damage and flooding during severe weather events.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ LIJ Nurse Brandon Brower Grows into Leadership Role

As National Nurses Week highlights the important role of these healthcare workers across the country each May, recognition for nurses like Brandon Brower should extend well beyond a single week.

Brower, 28, has spent the past six years building his career at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream hospital, growing from a critical care patient care associate to an assistant nurse manager overseeing multiple critical care units.

This year, Brower was nominated for Northwell Healthโ€™s Truly Awards in both the initiative and collaborative categories.

Outside the hospital, Brower has worked to strengthen ties with the community through a beach cleanup initiative he launched in Long Beach last year.

Would you use shuttle buses, work remotely, drive instead or make other arrangements?
