The waste is coming in the form of massive metal pipes irradiated at Los Alamos National Laboratory and buried underground. They're being dug up, cut into smaller pieces and shipped to WIPP - Waste Isolation Pilot Plant for permanent disposal.

The 158 pipes being exhumed and sent to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant were buried in 1986 and contained cemented radioactive liquid waste.

The work was ongoing by the City of Carlsbad NM Government, to the tune of about $14 million.
