A judge has tentatively ruled in a closely watched legal dispute tied to a local school board race.

A defamation claim in a libel lawsuit filed by San Diego County Planning Commissioner Kevin Sabellico against SDUHSD Trustee Michael Allman was dismissed after the court found insufficient evidence to meet the required legal standard of “actual malice,” among other shortcomings. The ruling stems from allegations tied to campaign activity during the 2024 election.

The decision also opens the door for the defendant to seek tens of thousands of dollars in attorney’s fees under California’s anti-SLAPP law, which is designed to protect political speech.

A new state proposal aimed at improving homelessness planning is drawing sharp resistance from cities across California, including in North County.

Encinitas officials voted to oppose a bill by Sen. Catherine Blakespear (D-Encinitas) on May 27 that would require cities to include more detailed homelessness data in their Housing Element. Supporters say it would improve accountability and coordination. Critics argue it imposes costly, complex requirements on cities that don’t control the underlying data or funding systems.

At the heart of the debate is a larger question: who should be responsible for tracking and managing homelessness data, and at what cost to local governments already under pressure to meet state housing mandates.

A new true crime podcast is diving into North County’s darkest stories, with a local twist.

“Coastal Crimes,” created by two Oceanside friends, explores cold cases from Oceanside and the surrounding region, blending deep research with storytelling and local insight. Their first episodes revisit well known and lesser known cases, including the story behind “Killer Sally” and a decades-old murder that may have ties to the Zodiac Killer.

Beyond the intrigue, the creators say their goal is to bring renewed attention to unsolved cases and, potentially, help deliver closure to families.

A major recreational project could be coming to Escondido, but key questions remain.

City leaders approved an agreement to begin negotiating a potential ice rink complex at Kit Carson Park, a proposal backed by the Anaheim Ducks’ foundation. The project would include multiple rinks, seating for events, and year-round programs for hockey, figure skating and public use.

Supporters see a regional destination that could boost tourism, youth sports and economic activity. Others are raising concerns about park space, traffic, long-term costs and what role the city may ultimately play.

Chamber Chat: Tourism doesn’t always mean going far; sometimes it means staying local.

A new summer campaign by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce is encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the community in a thoughtful way that directly supports local businesses. From restaurants and coffee shops to boutiques and events, every local purchase helps sustain jobs, nonprofits and the character of the city.

The campaign also reflects a growing trend: more people choosing experiences closer to home while still supporting local economies.

Early primary election results are beginning to take shape across North County. (Note: today's story is free.)

In the closely watched Board of Supervisors District 5 race, Rebecca Jones leads the field by more than 20%, with Kyle Krahel and John Franklin in a tight battle for second place and a likely spot in the November runoff.

In congressional races, Republican Jim Desmond holds a strong lead in the 48th District, positioning himself for the general election, while incumbent Democrat Mike Levin (49th) is headed for November. In one of the closest races, Democrat incumbent Darshana Patel leads Republican Carrie Espinoza by just 3.2% in what will be a November showdown for the State Assembly District 76 seat.

Meanwhile, Measure H is passing overwhelmingly (92% in favor), signaling strong early support for the proposed partnership between Tri-City Medical Center and Sharp HealthCare.

With tens of thousands of ballots still to be counted and turnout sitting at just 23.2%, the results remain fluid.

Guest Column: A former healthcare district leader is urging Tri-City voters to support Measure H.

The proposal would allow a long-term partnership between Tri City Medical Center and Sharp HealthCare, with supporters arguing it would bring major investment, modernize facilities, and restore key services, all while keeping the hospital publicly owned.

Backers say similar partnerships have worked elsewhere in San Diego County and could improve access to high-quality care in North County without raising local taxes.
