Summer in Indiana means sunshine, pools, and lots of time outside β and Dr. Murphy wants to make sure your family is protected! βοΈπ
Here are her top sun safety tips heading into summer:
𧴠SUNSCREEN
β’ Use SPF 30 or higher β broad spectrum (UVA + UVB)
β’ Apply 15β30 minutes before going outside
β’ Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating
β’ Don't forget ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of feet!
β’ Babies under 6 months: keep them out of direct sun and use shade + protective clothing
π CLOTHING & SHADE
β’ Sun-protective clothing (UPF-rated) is even better than sunscreen for prolonged exposure
β’ Seek shade between 10 AM and 4 PM when UV rays are strongest
β’ Wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses β yes, for kids too!
π§ HYDRATION
β’ Kids dehydrate faster than adults in the heat
β’ Encourage water breaks every 20β30 minutes during outdoor play
β’ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: pale/cool skin, heavy sweating, weakness, or nausea
