A pregnant inmate was about to give birth. But what the midwife saw on her foot changed everything...๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฒ...The prison ward was unusually silent that morning. No shouting. No slamming of iron doors. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath outside the narrow window of the infirmary. โWhoโs next on the list?โ Nurse Claudia asked, flipping through the crumpled appointment sheets.
The midwife, Helena, barely looked up. She had seen too much over the years โ too many broken women, too many hopeless births. But this one was different. Something gnawed at her, even before she stepped into the makeshift cell that doubled as a maternity room.
โInmate 1462,โ Claudia said. โDue any day now. They brought her in last month from the east block. No family, no history, no chatter.โ
โNo chatter?โ Helena raised an eyebrow. โThatโs rare in here.โ
Claudia gave a small shrug. โShe barely speaks. Doesnโt look anyone in the eye. Just sits in silence. But youโll see soon enough.โ
The cell door creaked open with the sound of metal grinding against rust. Inside, the woman sat on the edge of a cot, hands folded across her swollen belly, eyes fixed on the floor. Her hair was messy, but her posture was composed โ too composed.
Helena approached her slowly, setting down the clean linens and medical bag.
โHello,โ she said softly. โIโm Helena. Iโll be with you until your baby is born. Can I check you now?โ Read more in Comment or Most relevant -> All comments ๐
