Day 36: Alyssa Barlow

There are some people that I just wish would get every possible good thing in the world. Alyssa is one of those people. She would describe herself as a “perfectionist” at times. That becomes unhealthy when perfection is the only standard by which you live and measure others but, in a healthy sense, when we allow grace for the inevitable imperfections of people and life, why not strive for perfection? If perfection were possible, shouldn’t we at least aim for that? This is what Alyssa does. In music, in friendship, in relationships to Christ and others, in her understanding of herself, she aims for perfection and it often feels like she gets pretty damn close! But alas, the journey of improving yourself and the world around you is a never-ending and impossible task, and yet also a necessary and vitally important one. Carl Jung said “No tree… can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.” Alyssa has seen enough of the darkness to know how it works. But in that dark descent into suffering and really hard questions, she grows ever taller toward becoming an inspirational paragon of humanity. She’s paid a high price for what she has learned and she is sharing with others now in the form of the podcast which you should definitely listen to.

Alyssa has shown Natalie and I love that truly astounds us. She, her sister, and her mother usually watch Avery once a week and borderline begged us to take her once a week overnight (which all you parents out there know is a HUGE deal)! She baked me cookies when I was having a bad day, she and Lauren have helped us host just about every major life event celebration in the last 2 years, and she goes so far out of her way to give us rest and fill our hearts. I tell Natalie often, “We don’t deserve her.” I feel so completely overwhelmed by love that I feel I have done so little to earn but that’s because Alyssa understands true, unconditional, love. Alyssa, I love you. I thought you were cool 18 years ago in CYT, I thought you were cool in BarlowGirl, but I have never had more respect for you than just seeing the person that you are. I am so, so grateful for you.

Day 35: Rachel Hass

is WAY cooler than you probably think. Most people are surprised to hear that I was actually a very shy and anti-social kid. Since I was usually not in the public eye, my gifts and my personality would often go unnoticed. Because of this, I have always held a special place in my heart for the unsung heroes. Rachel Hass is one of these wildly talented people in the shadows. She’s so gentle and quiet and kind but also fiercely loyal, profoundly sincere, and curiously intelligent. Given her sweet, pleasant demeanor, it’s easy to underestimate the absolute masterpiece of a woman that lies beneath.

Today at church she was in charge of running production, she sang on the worship team, and she covered for sound, all with a calm spirit and a heartwarming smile. She does one of the most stressful and complicated jobs on a Sunday morning and she makes it look easy. Amidst this whole morning juggling act, she felt moved by the Holy Spirit to share something with our church as she tapped into the heart of God. While I would probably be too distracted or too stressed or too self-focused to do this, Rachel expressed the love of God through tears to a captive audience. She was STILL able to encounter Jesus AND bring other people to him. That’s next-level. Rachel, I am so often impressed by you. Your warm and sincere heart, your depth of thought and intellect, and your capacity to make everyone around you feel important and seen. You are a feast for the soul in a soul-starved world. Thank you for who you are. I’m grateful for you.

Day 34: Glory Joy Barlow

Last year at my birthday I awarded Glory Joy the “Most Lady Danny” award (which is arguably more of an insult than an award) and the reason why is because I see a lot of myself in her and It’s easy to appreciate someone when they are like you! *This next part may sound self-serving but bear with me.* She’s an ambitious self-starter who likes new and interesting challenges. She pops through tasks like bubble wrap and she does it all with a smile and a quick wit. She’s a superstar! And while I understand these traits the best, it’s the traits that are uniquely hers that I think I appreciate the most.

Yesterday Natalie and I sat buried in the post-hurricane debris that our 2-year old daughter had wrought on our family room feeling a little overwhelmed. Natalie is VERY pregnant so her capacity is much more limited than usual and I am at capacity as well for much less adorable reasons. Glory Joy had some free time and saw that Nat was in need of some love and she showed up with a Frappuccino and a smile! She took it upon herself to organize Avery’s entire play area (which was a behemoth undertaking) and made sense of an utterly senseless collection of plastics and plushies. When we needed help, Glory Joy offered her time, her patience, her follow-through, and the simple gift of her presence. She’s a peach. GJ, we are so blessed to have family like you! You give your best to your people and you are such a gift. I’d say I want to be like you but… you know… I already am. So for now I’ll just say, Thank you Glory Joy. I am grateful for you.

Day 34: 2021/New Beginnings

Some of my favorite video games to play are absurdly difficult and the only way to win is to simply overcome the challenge. The game doesn’t get easier, you just have to get better at playing it. That has been 2020 for us. The year has thrown us superboss challenges and there was no way out but through. We fought back against income dips, social restrictions, family tension, career disruptions, and widespread illness but we made it! We won! I certainly made some mistakes last year but each one taught me something about how to win next time.

So here’s the mindset I’m taking into 2021. I am not betting all my chips on things getting better, at least not quickly. Honestly there’s a decent chance things get worse! The game might not get easier, but you can still get better at playing it! If you lose your job, get another one or make one! If your family is hurting, ask for help, read books, try something new! If you can’t eat out, learn to cook! If you see a problem, don’t wait for 2021 to fix it, YOU can fix it! And if you can’t fix it, learn to release your grip on the things you can’t control. You can’t control 2021 but you can control yourself. As we have been buffered by wave after wave of hardship, complaining hasn’t made a single wave any smaller. Successful surfers don’t wish for smaller waves, they just get better at riding them. 2021, thanks for a fresh start, for reminding us that seasons do end eventually, and for another year to learn how to thrive even in stupid years like the last one. Let’s get better together.

Day 33: Wisdom

The most wise thing you can do in most difficult situations is admit that you don’t know. I have spent more than 2 decades in the Bible, read dozens of books, listened to countless podcasts and lectures, sat beneath a cornucopia of wise leaders and instructors, and still I often have no idea how to handle daily living. And I’m not just talking about politics and covid, I’m talking about simple things. Things like how to truly understand people I disagree with, or how to find peace amidst chaos, or how to let go of relationships I can’t control. 2020 has been a real p**p parade but life was tough long before this year. The beauty is that every problem in life has a solution. Some person, some book knows exactly how to bring peace to whatever ails you. The wisest thing you can do is go get it.

But of course every great good in the world has a nefarious counterpart. Out of all of the pain that 2020 has dealt out this year, the greatest pain this year came from ignorance. Ignorance is the antithesis of wisdom. It’s one thing to be simply unaware of something but to be mindfully ignorant is to know that there is a better way and not to choose it. This year I have watched family fall apart, mental health plummet, and many a tear fall because of ignorance. Wisdom would reach out, ask for council, humble itself, and seek understanding above all else, but ignorance only seeks to suffocate any opposing thought. Ignorance is death in relationships. So what am I grateful for? Wisdom brings life. Even amidst all of the pain and confusion, wisdom has brought us peace and understanding. Choosing wisdom over ignorance will likely mean that you have to admit that you’re wrong and that is an awful feeling, but the reward is that you can now do better for yourself and to/for others. Wisdom will likely cost you your pride and comfort, but better to be humble and wise than to be ignorant and cause destruction to yourself and others. Let’s admit we’re not smart enough on our own and learn from our mistakes. “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.” (Pro. 28:26). Thank you wisdom for promising us a better tomorrow.
