Day 36: Alyssa Barlow
There are some people that I just wish would get every possible good thing in the world. Alyssa is one of those people. She would describe herself as a “perfectionist” at times. That becomes unhealthy when perfection is the only standard by which you live and measure others but, in a healthy sense, when we allow grace for the inevitable imperfections of people and life, why not strive for perfection? If perfection were possible, shouldn’t we at least aim for that? This is what Alyssa does. In music, in friendship, in relationships to Christ and others, in her understanding of herself, she aims for perfection and it often feels like she gets pretty damn close! But alas, the journey of improving yourself and the world around you is a never-ending and impossible task, and yet also a necessary and vitally important one. Carl Jung said “No tree… can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.” Alyssa has seen enough of the darkness to know how it works. But in that dark descent into suffering and really hard questions, she grows ever taller toward becoming an inspirational paragon of humanity. She’s paid a high price for what she has learned and she is sharing with others now in the form of the podcast which you should definitely listen to.
Alyssa has shown Natalie and I love that truly astounds us. She, her sister, and her mother usually watch Avery once a week and borderline begged us to take her once a week overnight (which all you parents out there know is a HUGE deal)! She baked me cookies when I was having a bad day, she and Lauren have helped us host just about every major life event celebration in the last 2 years, and she goes so far out of her way to give us rest and fill our hearts. I tell Natalie often, “We don’t deserve her.” I feel so completely overwhelmed by love that I feel I have done so little to earn but that’s because Alyssa understands true, unconditional, love. Alyssa, I love you. I thought you were cool 18 years ago in CYT, I thought you were cool in BarlowGirl, but I have never had more respect for you than just seeing the person that you are. I am so, so grateful for you.
