We are no longer selling maps, books, and posters from our website https://greatswamppress.com/ and we are no longer printing new products. You can still get maps that may be stocked by outlets that sell our products. Those are listed at https://greatswamppress.com/local-stores/ We were all ready with an updated version of the North South Trail, but the cost of printing has become prohibitive. Very sorry about this :-(

You can no longer purchase our titles here at our website. Our maps are however, available at the stores below and other places in Rhode Island where books or maps are sold. Not every store sells every title so you may want to call ahead before making a trip.

Legislative Hearing On Bottle Bills February 11 – Please Send Testimony

Beverage litter is a problem in our parks and wildlife management areas and other public access lands. Bottle bills are a long shot, but there is a hearing on two of them Thursday night. In this post are easy directions to submit testimony. These are often held for further study - which kills them for another year. Perhaps if there is a lot of positive testimony the bills could get out of committee. Testimony needs to get in by tomorrow morning, February 11.

RI House bills 5113 and 5280 will make our roads cleaner and safer, reduce litter and marine debris, increase recycling rates, protect our environment and natural resources, and save taxpayers money.

Caution, December 5, 2020 Is Opening Day Of Shotgun Deer Season

Be Safe! Be sure to wear at least 500 square inches of florescent orange when hiking on state, federal, or other public and private open space.

Five hundred (500) square inches of solid Blaze Orange is required during shotgun deer season (December 5-December 20) by ALL users of State Management areas and designated undeveloped State Parks.

On private land, there is shotgun deer hunting allowed until January 2nd, so it is safest to keep wearing 500 square inches of blaze orange in case you stray onto private land.

CANCELLED: Public Hearing On The Proposed Transfer Of Funds From Bike and Pedestrian Trails

PUBLIC HEARINGS CANCELLED:

The February 25 and February 28th public hearings on transferring voter approved money away from bike paths and pedestrian trails and using it for general transportation improvements have been cancelled.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) points to the unexpected influx of approximately $70 million in federal funds allocated to Rhode Island though the 2019 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The availability of these resources across several different categories of federal funding has resulted in the withdrawal of RIDOT’s request. RIDOT has requested additional time to consider how to best utilize these added transportation funds to support their program of projects. It is anticipated that RIDOT will return to the Transportation Advisory Committee and State Planning Council for a Major Amendment in the near term with a modified request that reflects available resources.

This does not mean that they will not still request to take the bike and pedestrian path funding that voters have approved.

You can still write to RIDOT to let them know what you think of their plan to divert Bike Path money to other projects.

Why: Tell RIDOT what you think of their plan to take voter approved money away from bike paths and pedestrian trails

The 2018 Green Economy Bond, which included $5 million for state bikeway development, received 78 percent statewide voter approval.
The 2016 Green Economy Bond received 67 percent voter approval and included $10 million to expand the state’s bikeway network.
RIDOT now asks to take $28 million from bike path projects to fund projects like street paving and bridge repair work.
Funding approved by voters for bicycle projects would instead be used for general fund projects such as toll gantries.
The state has an obligation to use that money as it was presented to voters, but they will need pressure to do the right thing.

Written statements can be filed by mailing them to:
