🛑 Myths
🛑 Fake news
🛑 Urban legends
🛑 Personal opinions
🛑 Conspiracy theories
🛑 Debunked and outdated research

Whether you're just giving unsolicited health advice on social media 🙄 or spreading misinformation through your presentations or your writing, PLEASE think twice about whether you're sharing opinions or facts.

If you don't know how to spot fake news and debunked research, or if you don't know how to fact-check what you're reading online, I have good news for you.

There are excellent fact-checking resources all over the web, like FactCheck.org, PolitiFact, NutritionFacts.org and snopes.com. I'll share below a document that describes the SIFT and PICK methods of evaluating and fact-checking sources.

Starshine Roshell, Lisa Osborn and Amy Marie Orozco, three brilliant journalists who are local to me have recently received a grant to provide free media literacy training, starting in August.

Something may sound ABSOLUTELY believable to you. It may fall in line with everything you've ever been told and taught in your family of origin, community, culture, friend group and life.

But if you choose not to fact-check and validate your sources, you might be spreading misinformation without even realizing it.

Confirmation bias, the "tendency to process information by looking for, or interpreting, information that is consistent with existing beliefs," is normal and mostly unintentional.

But it's there. And if you want to be take seriously as a communicator, you have to constantly challenge your own confirmation biases, and make sure you're not just passing on information that sounds good to you but has not been verified.

🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Oh, and please stop giving health advice if you haven't been asked and you're not someone's doctor. kthxbye👋🏼
