Rest easy, Joe Ely. Such a sweet man, whose softspokenness belied his fierce intelligence, artistic restlessness, and incendiary stage presence. He was full of stories, outrageous but often told quietly: riding a motorcycle down the hallways of Monterey High in Lubbock, working for Gunther the Lion Tamer, hanging at TVs club, touring with the Clash, collaborating with Bruce Springsteen and John Prine and David Byrne, how he originally wrote “Honky Tonk Masquerade” as a lullaby for his drunken goats Spit and Slide (named for the Butch Hancock song, of course). Here he is, holding it down as always, with Terry Allen and others, in two of my favorite live photos of him. Big love to Sharon and Marie and his thousands of friends. Flatlanders Forever.
