Enough with the excuses. Rub some dirt on it. Wipe away the tears. Stand up. Do the hard thing. This isn’t meant to break you — it’s meant to build you.

Let’s be painfully honest.

Breaking barriers takes grit, determination, and heart, and Deputy Kirstie Gentry has all three.

Last week, Deputy Gentry made history as the first female to graduate from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office SWAT School and officially join our Special Response Team (SRT).

Deputy Gentry began her career with the Sheriff’s Office in February 2024, working in the Carroll County Jail while training alongside the SWAT team beginning that April. In September, she entered mandate training at North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy, where she graduated on with the second-highest GPA in her class.

Before joining the Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Gentry spent more than five years in EMS, serving her community as a paramedic for four years, a background that continues to strengthen her skill, focus, and calm under pressure.

SWAT School is one of the toughest and most physically demanding training programs a Deputy can face, a test of endurance, teamwork, and mental toughness. Deputy Gentry didn’t just face it, she conquered it.

We are incredibly proud of Deputy Gentry for her perseverance, professionalism, and as a trailblazing example for others. Her accomplishment is proof that with drive and dedication, there are no limits to what can be achieved.

Congratulations, Deputy Gentry, your hard work and courage have opened the door for others to follow. 🖤💙🖤

Due to a lack of federal funding, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will not be available starting Nov. 1, the Georgia Department of Human Services announced today.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently notified the department that there is not enough funding to cover November SNAP benefits if the federal government shutdown continues.

SNAP recipients can still use existing funds on their EBT cards, but based on current USDA guidance, cards will not work beginning Nov. 1. DHS suggests that recipients shop for needed items now. EBT card balances can be verified via the ConnectEBT website or app. The ConnectEBT app can be downloaded on Android or Apple devices from the device’s app store.

SNAP benefits are 100% federally funded. The state Department of Human Services disburses the benefits to eligible households.

The department asks that recipients who have already applied for SNAP not submit additional applications, as doing so will not affect when or how benefits are issued.

The department said it understands the importance of SNAP benefits to Georgia families and is closely monitoring the situation.
