25 years later, we honor the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the countless families forever changed by that day.

We also honor the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, and other first responders who ran toward danger to help others. Many never made it home.
Their courage, sacrifice, and service will never be forgotten!

Another day of heat is expected with high temperatures climbing into the 90s over much of the area. The warmest temperature and highest humidity combination will be over southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois where afternoon and early evening heat indexes will climb to around 105 degrees where a heat advisory is in effect.

PRESS RELEASE - GRAND JURY INDICTMENT

On August 17th 2026, a Calhoun County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Richard J Large, aged 34, of Kampsville, Illinois for the offense of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault – Victim Under 13-Years-Old, a Class X Felony.

This investigation began on April 21st 2026, when the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a Child Sexual Assault, which was alleged to have occurred in Kampsville, Calhoun County, Illinois.

Sheriff Zach Hardin investigated the complaint, and began gathering evidence and conducting interviews. During this investigation, Sheriff Hardin and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Illinois Department of Child & Family Services (DCFS) and the United Child Advocacy Network; who assisted with conducting forensic child interviews.

Following the Calhoun County Grand Jury Indictment, a Warrant of Arrest was issued; and Large was arrested without incident by Officers from the Carrolton Police Department later that same day.

On August 18th 2026, Large was brought before the Honorable Judge Charles HW Burch for initial appearance and a Pre-Trial Detention hearing. Under the Statutory Requirements of the SAFE-T Act; Large was granted Conditional Pre-Trial Release, with GPS Monitoring for the pendency of this case.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the brave victim for coming forward, the United Child Advocacy Network (UCAN), and Illinois Department of Child & Family Services (DCFS) for their assistance with this investigation, and the Calhoun County State’s Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the presentation of the case and its ongoing prosecution. We would also like to thank the Carrolton Police Department for their assistance in the apprehension of the suspect.
