South Carolina Rep Highlights Great Need for an Article V Convention

South Carolina State Representative Bill Taylor recently wrote an op-ed. In it, he calls for a “structural reset” of the U.S. government through an Article V convention of states.

Taylor argues that Washington’s dysfunction—highlighted by government shutdowns, partisanship, and a $38 trillion national debt—proves Congress will never limit its own power. He believes the states must act by proposing constitutional amendments to impose fiscal restraints, term limits, and clearer limits on federal authority, reaffirming states’ rights under the Tenth Amendment.

Congress is Robbing our Kids

America’s growing $38 trillion debt stems from politicians’ and citizens’ appetite for government handouts, which threaten freedom and fiscal stability. Now is a great time for an Article V convention to impose spending limits, shrink government, and establish term limits for politicians.

We Must Stop Out-of-Control Federal Debt

The government shutdown is disrupting daily life across the U.S., affecting air travel, federal employees (including military personnel), and numerous federal agencies. Many furloughed workers may not receive back pay, causing financial hardship. Essential services continue, but key data releases and operations in major departments like Homeland Security, Treasury, Agriculture, and others are suspended. JPMorgan Chase estimates a weekly 0.1% GDP loss from the shutdown.

Kimberly English, a member of the COS Ohio Team, points out in a recent letter to the Editor that with the federal debt exceeding $37 trillion, all elected representatives must prioritize fiscal responsibility. In her letter, English calls for reforms such as congressional term limits, a balanced budget amendment, and returning power to the states. She urges lawmakers to initiate an Article V convention to enact these changes.

He advocates for patience and persistence, believing meaningful change could take decades. Rather than adopting a partisan or extremist approach, Jordan focuses on building bipartisan coalitions around the COS movement’s goals: limiting federal power, spending, and terms of office. His outreach — including successful petition drives at events like Santa Monica’s “No Kings” protest — emphasizes that these constitutional reforms can unite Americans across party lines.
