Congress Rams Through Shocking DOGE Cuts. But Is it Enough?

Last Thursday, Congress passed a $9 billion rescissions package proposed by President Trump’s Office of Management and Budget. Approved by the Senate and narrowly passed in the House, the bill aims to cut “waste, fraud, and abuse” by eliminating funding for various programs, including public broadcasting, international LGBTQIA+ advocacy, and promoting veganism abroad.

Supporters, like House Speaker Mike Johnson, hailed the bill as a step toward efficiency and Trump celebrated its passage; however, to truly tackle fiscal irresponsibility, deeper reform, such as a Convention of States, is needed.

Department of Education Eliminates Free Tuition for Illegal Immigrants

President Trump’s Education Secretary, Linda McMahon, has expressed her goal of eliminating the Department of Education by returning its responsibilities to the states. As part of this effort, the Department has revoked a Clinton-era policy that allowed illegal immigrants to access taxpayer-funded postsecondary education programs. McMahon emphasized that such benefits should be reserved for U.S. citizens and legal residents.

This move aligns with the Trump administration’s broader agenda to prioritize American citizens in education and welfare benefits. It follows recent actions like Texas ending in-state tuition for undocumented students and Florida rescinding a similar law. Officials like Attorney General Pam Bondi and Governor Ron DeSantis argue that giving taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal immigrants is unfair to citizens.

The elimination of free tuition for illegal immigrants is a small step towards putting American citizens first and empowering states, while limiting the federal government.
