Show 427 - Free Reed Frenzy (2026-05-30)
It's too bad that accordions have such a bad reputation. Although the butt of jokes around the world, there's something about the lift and drive of tunes on a button box or concertina that convinces your feet to get moving. Most of the accordions Katie Marie and Joe are featuring this week are melodeons, which are diatonic button accordions, and they rely on the player's push and pull on the bellows to play full scales--and this pulse of the bellows is what creates the incredible danceability and lift. This week, we are excited to present a preview track from the upcoming release from Victoria Adiiye & Dáithí Sproule.

The artists this week: Marie & Martin Reilly; The High Seas; Niamh Ní Charra; Tara Breen & Pádraig Rynne; Ship in the Clouds; Verena Commins & Julie Langan; Joe Cooley; Victoria Adiiye & Dáithí Sproule; Mick Conneely-David Munnelly-Caitríona Ní Cheannabháin; Patrick Street; Sharon Shannon; De Danann; and Noel Hill & Tony MacMahon.

It's Memorial Day in the United States, and Katie Marie and Joe observe the day with songs and tunes that remember those who gave all in conflicts throughout the centuries. Traditional music has a long memory, and provide the record of the honor, heartbreak, and horrors of battles in wars no matter the countries involved. The show this week focuses on those left behind when their loved ones go off to war.

It's Mother's Day, and Katie Marie and Joe (mostly) honor mothers' special day by playing an hour of Celtic music all about mothers. Most of the tunes and songs are saluting and venerating mother's and their steadfast love of their children, but we've tossed in a couple of songs about mothers behaving rather badly.

Thanks to the upside-down snow-free winter out west, and the crushing snow and ice in the midwest and east, Katie Marie and Joe were left wondering if it's fair to call this "Summer" or do we need to come up with new name for this season? Finally, the weather is lovely in the High Sierra, but it's roasting elsewhere while cool and wet in the northeast. We put together an hour of summery trad Celtic music for you to either enjoy the coming of Spring, the remnants of Winter, or the blazing summer sun wherever you might be.

The first of May is observed around the world as a day to celebrate the labor movement and the struggle of workers to better their lives. It's also the Celtic holiday of Bealtaine, marking the start of Summer. Katie Marie and Joe did double duty by squeezing both May Day celebrations into this hour.

This week, Katie Marie and Joe put together a show not bound by any theme. This means that Joe gets to dive into some more Breton and Spanish Celtic music. And speaking of Breton music, we're premiering a track from a brand new release from the Bay Area's TrouzBras, a group that plays exclusively Breton music. Finally, sadly on the heels of news of Dolores Keane's death, the music world was struck this week by the passing of Moya Brennan, who along with Clannad kindled the flames of Contemporary Celtic music. We'll be playing some tracks featuring Moya Brennan as well.

The artists this week: Gerry O'Connor; Holly Sternberg Kozan (feat.

It's time to revisit our past ten shows and present tunes and songs that had to get cut to bring the show under an hour. Katie Marie and Joe put together this playlist to revisit these great tracks only to discover that this playlist overran by two hours as well. We also received a brand new CD from fiddler Holly Sternberg. You'll be hearing more tracks from her in the near future.

The artists we revisited this week: Cape to Clare; Gráinne Murphy; Shay & Michael Black; Banda de Gaitas del Batallón de San Patricio; Bob Bickerton; Altan; Karan Casey & John Doyle; Solas; De Dannan; Olion Byw; Holly Sternberg Kozan (feat.

Every year about this time, folks in the United States dread the inexorable encroachment of April 15th, tax deadline day. Katie Marie and Joe use the Ben Franklin saying, "In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes," as a jumping-off point to put together a great Celtic playlist of songs and tunes about...death and taxes.

The artists this week: Michael Coleman; Frank Harte-Donal Lunny; Joe Heaney; Caitlin Finley & Will Woodson; Michael "Blackie" O'Connell & Karol Lynch; Sinéad O'Connor; Niamh Parsons; Janet Russell & Christine Kydd; Danú; Poor Man's Fortune; The Bothy Band; Battlefield Band; Solas; and Dervish.

The Spring Equinox slipped by right after Saint Patrick's Day, with a promise of rebirth, renewal, and the coming of Spring. Katie Marie and Joe put together a set of Spring-themed Celtic music. Even if you're in the West, where winter never happened, or in the East, where winter definitely happened, we hope that this hour gets you in the mood for budding trees and new-mown meadows wherever you are.
