Pianist and music educator Richard Turner Jr. — known to fans as ""88 Fingers"" for his mastery of every key on the keyboard — takes the stage this Sunday as he headlines the 4th Annual Richard Turner Jr. Musical Gifts Scholarship Concert.

A three-decade veteran of the music industry, Turner has shared stages and studios with gospel great Thomas Whitfield and R&B legends James Ingram and Teena Marie, and spent 18 years as musical director for smooth jazz artist Eric Darius. A Cal State Dominguez Hills music education graduate, he's built the concert into an annual celebration of music, education and opportunity for young Black musicians.

This year's show will name the three recipients of the 2026 Richard Turner Jr. Musical Gifts Scholarships — and double as a birthday celebration for Turner himself.

📍 Breath of Life Seventh-day Adventist Church, 425 S. La Brea Ave., Inglewood
🕔 Sunday, Sept. 13 | 5 p.m.

NVIDIA reported blockbuster earnings, reinvigorating the AI trade. But Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh may have delivered the more consequential headline at Jackson Hole: he’s ending forward guidance — the post-2008 practice of signaling future Fed moves — and telling markets to form their own expectations.

Here’s why that matters:
📌 U.S. Treasury interest costs now exceed $1 trillion annually — more than defense spending
📌 PCE inflation at 3.7% — above the Fed’s 2% target for 65 straight months
📌 Markets now pricing a 57% chance of a September rate hike
📌 AI’s massive debt-and-equity buildout makes it more exposed to rate increases than ever

CIO Brent Schutte’s bottom line: the era of quick policy rescues may be fading. Forward returns could be lower. Market hiccups may last longer. And diversification matters more than ever.

How are you thinking about your investment strategy heading into the fall?

The Truth in Disclosure Act — AB 2599 — passed the California Legislature 60-13 on August 26 and is now on Gov. Newsom’s desk. If signed, it would require corporations with $100M+ in annual receipts doing business in California to submit sworn affidavits disclosing historical ties to chattel slavery — creating a publicly searchable digital archive of corporate profiteering from slavery.

No other state has done this. California could be first.

Emmy Award-winning activist W. Kamau Bell joined the Day of Action rally at the State Capitol, saying: “The nation is watching California because this state often leads the way on big nationwide discussions.”

Assemblymember Isaac Bryan called it an educational tool, not a punitive one: “Many folks don’t know that companies wrote policies with slaves, that banks backed loans with slaves as collateral. California deserves to know these answers.”

Should corporations be required to disclose their historical ties to slavery? Share your thoughts.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital was built for 25,000 emergency visits a year. Today it’s treating 125,000 — with patients sometimes triaged in tents outside.

Assemblymember Mike Gipson’s AB 2405 just passed the California Legislature and is now on Gov. Newsom’s desk. The bill would require law enforcement to transport patients to the nearest appropriate emergency department — helping distribute ER demand more equitably across hospitals and giving safety-net facilities like MLK a fighting chance.

The bill comes alongside a landmark $32 million Kaiser Permanente investment to expand MLK’s Hope Emergency Center — a rare moment of good news for one of LA’s most medically underserved communities.

“It’s in the best interest of vulnerable patients to travel to the closest doctor who can help.” — Asm. Mike Gipson

Do you think California does enough to protect safety-net hospitals serving low-income communities?
