I meant to post this a few days ago for “Thirteen Inch Wheel Thursday” but life got in the way.
One of my passions and interests is classic and retro wheels and over the years, I've managed to build up a decent collection of examples from the mid to late 1960's. I want to share the great styling and story of these wheels so why not start posting info about them... Today's sample is the American Racing Equipment Libre. Most of us know this wheel from the famous BRE Datsun 510s but it actually existed well before the 510 was even offered. The Libre was first produced in the mid 1960's and was designed for racing use only , cast in magnesium and available in 13x6, 7, 8, and 9 inch. This particular wheel is 13 x 9 inch and features a 6 bolt fitment and would have been found on the rear of sports racers of the day like this Lotus 23 driven by Frank Monise. Of course American Racing still exists but unfortunately they no longer offer their early designs. Stay tuned for next weeks post with more 1960's American Racing Equipment styles. Also- I am aware of the risk and precautions regarding the use of old magnesium wheels. No public service announcement needed.
Size: 13" x 9"
Weight: 13.1 lbs
Material: Magnesium

Despite Colin Chapmans’ ambition of the sixties to conquer the Clubmans Formula with a series of Lotus 37’s, in the end he chose to build only one. Apart from a number of formula cars, hardly any regular Lotus type is unique. This fact makes the 37 instantly ‘special’. Why was only one Three...

For those of us in the Lotus and English Ford world , Dave Bean Engineering has been the go to place for years for just about anything we needed to keep our cars on the road or track. Sadly, Dave passed away a few years ago but the business carries on with his wife and loyal team carrying the torch. We’re up in Northern Cal this weekend for the charity race at Sears Point so a mandatory visit to DBE was in order. The place is a virtual trove of parts reflective of being in the business since the early 70’s. Without small businesses like this, it would be difficult if not impossible to enjoy out classics.

Back to daily driving the Anglia now that she’s got a new starter. Thanks to for keeping the box on the road. A coworker asked me today if I was afraid to drive this on the freeway. The answer was obviously NO!
