Lt. Col. Chay M. Derbigny, Commander and Professor of Aerospace Studies for Air Force ROTC Detachment 205 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale was the featured speaker during Carterville’s Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony on Nov. 11, 2025, at the Carterville Veterans Memorial. The American Legion John A. Logan Post 347 honor guard rendered a three-volley rifle salute.

The event included an invocation by Youth Pastor and veteran Jeremy Wynn of Love and Truth Church and remarks by Mayor Brad Robinson, and featured the Carterville Fire Department flying a large U.S. flag over Division Street.

The event, hosted by the Carterville Chamber of Commerce, drew hundreds of trick-or-treaters for games, candy, and community fun.

Unbeaten and unstoppable: Lions crush Massac County 50-7 on senior night 🦁🔥
Carterville extended its unbeaten season Friday with a 50-7 win over Massac County on senior night. The Lions scored on every first-half possession, leading 42-0 at halftime before the clock ran continuously in the second half. Johnny Miller led the offense with three touchdowns, including a 92-yard run, while Jack Dodson opened the game with a pick-six. Jamie Jones, Carter Jones, and Reginald Wilson also found the end zone for Carterville, which improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in River-to-River Ohio Division play. The Lions travel to Murphysboro next week.

Carterville 7th grader Grace Hibdon leaps into the air under laser lights Friday night during the middle school dance hosted by Grand Avenue Baptist Church. The event, open to local 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, featured a DJ, concessions, fog machines, and colorful lighting effects. The church recently revived the tradition of post-football-game dances popular among Carterville students in the early 2000s.

STATE CHAMPS! The Carterville Junior High softball team brought the hardware home tonight after defeating the West Frankfort Redbirds 4-3 in seven innings at the Oasis Sports Complex in Marion.
Molly Stock, Carterville’s sole pitcher for the game, said the pressure of the championship “kept me motivated to keep going” and added that “it feels amazing” to win the championship.

🎃 Pumpkin Patch Day for Tri-C First Graders! 🍂
All of Tri-C Elementary’s first graders spent the day enjoying autumn adventures — starting at Herrin Park and wrapping up at Bandy’s Pumpkin Patch. Even some teachers joined in on the fun. Classes led by Ms. Landon, Mrs. Fulkerson, Ms. Having, Mrs. Horn, Mrs. Brookhouse, Ms. Beach, Mrs. Busby and Mrs. Smith made the most of the sunshine, hayrides and fall colors before heading back to Carterville by early afternoon.

Carterville Junior High School students took the stage Thursday, May 22, at Carterville High School for the 2025 CJHS Variety Show, themed “Shine Like Stars.”

The show featured a wide range of student talent, including vocal and instrumental performances, dance numbers, comedy skits and even a trained caterpillar act. The CJHS Band opened the night with “Just Like Fire” and “Centuries.”

Other audience favorites included Sophie White’s piano and vocal piece “Wondering,” Xavi Valdes’ marimba performance of music from “Mother3,” and the comedic skit “Floyd, the Trained Caterpillar.”

The CJHS Choir closed the evening with a performance inspired by Holst’s “The Planets.” Hosts Skylah Fourez and Claire Samples kept the crowd engaged, while stage crew members ensured smooth transitions behind the scenes.

The event was sponsored by CJHS language arts teacher Gabe Herbst, CIS band director Dannyel Norrington and choir director Carlyn Zimmerman.

The annual Carterville Egg Hunt brought families together for a morning of springtime fun behind the Carterville Community Center.

Rescheduled to Saturday, April 12, the event began at 9 a.m. with children’s activities, followed by the main egg hunt at 10.
Kids arrived with baskets in hand and smiles on their faces, eager to search for eggs and greet the Easter Bunny, who made an appearance.

The event was sponsored by the City of Carterville, McDonald’s, Cornerstone Church and First Southern Bank.
