Carterville Junior High School students took the stage Thursday, May 22, at Carterville High School for the 2025 CJHS Variety Show, themed “Shine Like Stars.”

The show featured a wide range of student talent, including vocal and instrumental performances, dance numbers, comedy skits and even a trained caterpillar act. The CJHS Band opened the night with “Just Like Fire” and “Centuries.”

Other audience favorites included Sophie White’s piano and vocal piece “Wondering,” Xavi Valdes’ marimba performance of music from “Mother3,” and the comedic skit “Floyd, the Trained Caterpillar.”

The CJHS Choir closed the evening with a performance inspired by Holst’s “The Planets.” Hosts Skylah Fourez and Claire Samples kept the crowd engaged, while stage crew members ensured smooth transitions behind the scenes.

The event was sponsored by CJHS language arts teacher Gabe Herbst, CIS band director Dannyel Norrington and choir director Carlyn Zimmerman.

Note: As both a parent and the person behind Carterville Now, I had the chance to tag along with Mrs. Cook’s kindergarten class on their field trip to Giant City State Park. I provide content for this page when I can due to my busy schedule but I see this as an opportunity to inform what is going on in our district.

My youngest son is in this class, so yes, you’ll spot him in a few of the 60+ photos we’ve shared. And I was limited to sticking with just one class as I was helping move kids from one area to another.

Parents — if you couldn’t make it, know that your kids were incredibly well behaved. And we should all be proud of the hard-working Tri-C Kindergarten teachers who trudged through the mud to give these students a memorable day. Taking a day to be out in nature and getting muddy is frankly just what students need. I didn't have the opportunity to do this at my school at their age.

This gallery isn’t just a personal moment — it’s a glimpse into a special day filled with learning, laughter, and nature.

The students rotated through hands-on stations led by volunteers covering everything from local plants and insects to conservation. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources led engaging activities that brought their classroom lessons to life.

From sack lunches under the shelter to curious kids exploring the trails, it was a day worth remembering. From this parent to all involved, thank you.

The 14th Annual Christmas in Carterville took place Tuesday, Dec. 17, in downtown Carterville, drawing families and residents to a festive evening of holiday activities. The event featured food, horse-drawn carriage rides, live music, crafts, and other seasonal entertainment.

Visitors gathered along Division Street to enjoy a Christmas carousel, while the Fire Department hosted face painting, crafts, and soup and hot dogs. Attendees also enjoyed complimentary popcorn, cookies, and hot chocolate, adding to the holiday atmosphere.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus greeted children at the gazebo, where a Christmas movie played for attendees. Pre-sold tickets for carriage rides were honored, with additional tickets available for purchase during the event.

The event was originally scheduled earlier in the month but was postponed to Dec. 17 due to inclement weather forecasts. Organizers highlighted the efforts of volunteers in coordinating the evening and encouraged community support. Photos by Devin Miller / Carterville Now
