All three by early Thursday morning were taken back into custody, were placed in lockdown and never represented a threat to the community at any time, according to Police Chief Kevin Polk.

Leake County officials said Tuesday the Mississippi Forestry Commission had issued an extreme fire danger advisory for the coming weekend.

Fire Coordinator Tommy Malone said state officials had advised him that humidity levels were expected to plummet and winds were expected to spring up, multiplying the danger of outdoor fires in Central Mississippi.

Leake County and Carthage have imposed bans on all outdoor fires, but the advisory Tuesday centered more on fire departments than private citizens.
“They said,” he reported, “to concentrate on protecting homes; we don’t have enough water to fight the fires.”

City and county officials have already begun issuing citations for violations of the burn bans, imposing fines as high as $1,000.

Any fires that escape bounds and damages neighboring property could expose the ones responsible for the flame to liability for the damages, plus costs of fire crews’ suppression efforts

Wildland Fire Statement

Dangerously hot temperatures and lack of measurable rainfall has led to an increasing favorable condition for wildfires. Extreme temperatures around 100 degrees and heat indexes of up to 115 degrees or more and lack of measurable rainfall will continue to worsen the conditions. Please refrain from any outside burning if at all possible until we see these conditions subside.

REMEMBER you own the fire when you set it. You are responsible for any damages or costs that may occur. The excessive heat also further endangers the fire fighters and emergency personnel when they have to work in these extreme weather conditions.

As of now there is only a wild fire and outside burning advisory, however, if conditions continue to worsen, burn bans could be forthcoming. The City of Carthage is not issuing any burn permits until wildfire conditions subside.
