is getting snowed out across the Midwest. If you feel comfortable driving in this weather, there are businesses that are open, but you may want to check social media or even call ahead to make sure your destination is still open. Our small businesses deserve your patronage, so consider making it a Small Business Week, won't you?
Now, the weather!
WINTER STORM WARNING THROUGH SUNDAY 6AM
* WHAT...Heavy snow. Total snow accumulations of 12-16". Winds gusting as high as 35 mph this morning and then again this evening through tonight.
* WHERE...Portions of east central, northeast, and southeast Iowa.
* IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will
likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in
your vehicle in case of an emergency. the latest road conditions are
available at 511ia.org or by calling 511.
Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely
necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter
storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains,
booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing.
Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help
you survive in case you become stranded.
Most roads across the state are 100% snow covered, and some roads in Central Iowa (north of the Des Moines metro to near US 20 and between Boone and Marshalltown) are 100% ice covered. In cities, main roads are passable, but still have plenty of snow, ice and slush on them. If you DO drive, you DON'T have to drive the max speed limit. As you come to intersections, slow down and begin stopping earlier than you ordinarily would, as you'll likely slide into the intersection if you don't.
