Repentance can feel like punishment. We look back at our failures and assume that the only way to prove we're sorry is to keep feeling guilty and ashamed.

But look at the way Jesus responds to Peter.

Jesus doesn't ignore Peter's sin, or just let him wallow in it. He meets Peter in the place where he failed and invites him to begin again. The answer to Peter's sin isn't endless shame. It's a renewed willingness to turn around and follow Christ.

Repentance isn't simply feeling guilty or remorseful for our sins. It's recognizing that we've been going the wrong way, turning around, and choosing to follow Christ.

Christ came to ransom us from sin and captivity and show us that there is another way to live. Repent. Turn around. Follow Christ.

You can be sorry and still never change. Repentance is different.

It’s not just feeling bad about what you’ve done. It’s turning away from the things that are keeping you from God and choosing to walk in a new direction.

Surrender says, “God, I give You my life.”

Repentance says, “Now I’m going to start living like it.”

This week on Just a Guy in the Pew, we continue the Power Made Perfect series and talk about what real repentance looks like—and why sometimes you simply have to get up and start walking by to the Father.

Control is an illusion. It is a make-believe suit of armor we put on to stifle our fears: fear of getting hurt, being let down, losing something, or trusting God with what we can't predict.

But control doesn't eliminate those fears. It often makes them worse. The more we try to control, the more anxiety we feel. We were never meant to have everything in our hands. We have to let go, trust God, and allow Him to lead us where He wants us to go.

I recently came across a clip from Theo Von podcast where he opened up about struggling to surrender control. Even as he prayed for God to heal him, there was a part of him that knew he was lying and didn't even want to be healed.

Surrender is the next step on the journey of healing and restoration. But we can't fully surrender to a God we believe is waiting to punish or shame us. Healing begins when we learn to trust that God meets us in our brokenness with love, mercy, and grace.

A man’s deepest, most fundamental identity is as a son of God.

We chase power and titles and material goods and ascribe other identities to ourselves, but the one God Himself gave us is that of His beloved son. The more we grow in this identity, the clearer our lives become.

Our goal is to give men places of accompaniment where this identity, the truth that we are God’s beloved sons, can be recognized and nurtured the way God intended: with each other.
