40 years ago, "Double Dare" hit the airwaves from WHYY studios in Center City, Philadelphia — putting the young Nickelodeon kids network and host Marc Summers on the pop culture map.

The game show featured two teams competing for prizes in a trivia battle with a sloppy twist: If a team didn't know an answer, they could "dare" or "double dare" their opponents, forcing them into a messy physical challenge or the legendary multistage obstacle course.

Produced initially in Philly, the show had a brief stint in New York before returning to Center City and eventually relocating to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. While Summers’ original hosting run concluded in 1993, the show’s slime-filled legacy lived on with reboots in 2000 and 2018–19.
