Let’s talk about AI for a minute.

Not the “replace your entire staff with robots by Tuesday” version of AI. The practical version.

Most small businesses don’t need someone to show up and start throwing AI tools at them. They need someone to sit down, look at the chaos, and ask:

**What are you doing over and over again?
**What takes way too long?
**Where are things constantly falling through the cracks?
**What information exists in six different places because apparently everyone agreed to make this as difficult as possible?

Then we figure out what would actually help.

Sometimes the answer is AI. Sometimes it’s automation. Sometimes it’s better software. And sometimes the process itself is the problem, and adding AI would just create a faster, more expensive version of the same mess.

That’s the kind of work we're interested in doing more of: helping small businesses make sense of what’s happening behind the scenes, find the places where technology can genuinely make life easier, and build something useful around that.

AI is the tool.

🔧 Another build in the books: a voice AI that calls new leads the second they come in - because the faster you follow up, the more likely that lead actually becomes a customer.

This one gave me the most "aha, glad I caught that" moments yet. A few things I ran into and fixed along the way:

🔓 Found and removed a piece of sensitive info that never should've been sitting out in the open
🧩 Caught a spot where two parts of the system weren't "speaking the same language," so data was getting lost in translation
⚙️ Fixed a setting that was quietly turned off when it should've been on
👻 Tracked down a sneaky bug where something looked like it worked... but actually did nothing, with no error to warn you
🏷️ Added a missing label the system needed to keep track of records properly
🔀 Fixed a mismatch where one part of the build expected a name, and another expected a number

And my favorite discovery of the week: when you test-call the AI agent from your browser, it doesn't have a real phone number attached. Sounds tiny, but if you don't know that going in, you'll waste an hour convinced your build is broken - when really, it's just testing mode being testing mode. Filing that one away for next time. 😅

I also flagged an honest "here's what's not done yet" note for myself: phone numbers need to be formatted a specific way before this touches a real client, or the whole thing can silently stop working. Better to know that now than get surprised later.

This is the part of building with AI that nobody shows you in the highlight reel: the debugging, the "wait, why isn't this working" moments, the stuff you catch before it becomes someone else's problem. Twenty-plus years in a heavily regulated industry taught me to always look for that gap before it bites you. 💪

Prototype series - EP2:

One lesson we keep running into - whether it's in business or at home - is that assumptions are expensive.

After organizing the grocery items we buy most often, the next step is simple: stop guessing on prices.

We started pulling information from our actual receipts instead of relying on memory.

This one small change has turned a list into something useful. Now it's based on real purchasing habits and real costs instead of estimates.

It's a good reminder that better decisions usually don't require more data - they require better data.

Prototype series - EP1:

One thing we enjoy is solving our own everyday problems before we ever suggest solutions to someone else.

Lately we’ve been looking for simple ways to spend a little less at the grocery store.

Instead of relying on memory, we started documenting what we actually buy - the brands we consistently choose and the products that make up our regular shopping trips.

It sounds simple, but getting everything out of our heads and into one organized place immediately made future planning easier.

Sometimes the biggest improvements don’t start with complicated technology.

They start with understanding your process.

Picture 📸 this:

Someone lands on your website 🌐 at 9:47 PM because they’re interested in your services.

They have questions. They want answers. They might even be ready to buy.

But your business is closed, you’re off the clock, and you definitely do not want to be answering website inquiries from the couch. 😂

That’s the kind of problem I was thinking about when I built a lead-generation chat agent.

It can:
💬 Answer common questions
📝 Collect the details needed to understand what the customer wants
📊 Provide a personalized estimate or recommendation
📱 Capture their contact information
🗂️ Save the lead so the business can follow up

Basically, it helps keep the conversation moving even when the business owner is busy, sleeping, eating dinner, or pretending not to see their phone. 😅

The goal isn’t to replace real people or real conversations.

It’s to make sure a potential customer doesn’t disappear just because they reached out after hours.

Of course, the build wasn’t completely plug-and-play. There were broken connections, data fields to rebuild, errors to troubleshoot, and a few “why is this doing THAT?” moments along the way.

But that’s part of building an MVP.

You test it. You break it. You fix it 🔨. You learn what needs to be better before putting it in front of an actual customer.

Now the workflow can take someone from their first question all the way through lead capture.

And honestly, this kind of setup could work for all kinds of service businesses.

AI doesn’t always have to be some giant, complicated robot takeover situation.

Sometimes it just helps you answer faster, stay organized, and stop good leads from wandering off into the internet abyss. 🤖✨

Building something new behind the scenes today 👀

We’ve been working on a new WordPress website for a small business, getting the foundation in place, setting up the branding, and creating an easy way to add and update content over time.

We love projects like this because it’s not just about making a website look good. It’s about making it practical, manageable, and built to grow with the business.

🤖 AI Development Lesson of the Day…
You know those videos where someone builds an AI app in 15 minutes and everything works perfectly?

Yeah… that’s not real life. 😂

This week I built an AI-powered expense tracking assistant that logs receipts from Telegram into Google Sheets, answers questions about spending, and can even alert the CFO for large purchases.

What the highlight reel doesn’t show:
☕ AI models getting retired.
🔑 API keys needing billing enabled.
🐛 Mysterious errors like “Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘parts’).”
🤦‍♀️ Me talking to my computer like it was suddenly going to explain itself.

The funny part? Every bug I fixed taught me something I didn’t know yesterday.

Building AI isn’t about avoiding problems - it’s about learning how to solve them. And honestly… that’s part of the fun.

Today’s victory? The expense tracker is logging expenses again, and I even taught it that Technology is a real expense category. 💻🎉
