The number of bald eagle nests in Ohio soared from 707 to 964 in a five-year period, reflecting an increase of 36% in what state officials are hailing as a milestone in conservation efforts.
In fact, the 2025 bald eagle nest census shows that the state's eagle population "is resilient and thriving," Laura Kearns, a wildlife biologist with Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, said in a news release.
From 2020 to 2025, the number of bald eagle nests rose from four to seven in Auglaize County, one to two in Darke County, 16 to 19 in Mercer County and two to three in Van Wert County, the 2025 census shows.

In an unforgettable display of humanity, kindness and unwavering support from the community, a Pickerington family has been reunited with their 3-year-old pet boxer, Lilly.

Tom Dains and his family found themselves in a stressful situation in what was supposed to be a relaxing holiday weekend. Every Fourth of July, Dains, his wife, their two children - and this year one on the way - come up to Celina to stay with some friends on Bass Landing. This year wrinkled the tradition when Lilly, a brown boxer who has become part of the family, got startled by the fireworks and ran off.

CELINA - Area school superintendents breathed a sigh of relief last week as Gov. Mike DeWine signed the state's biennium budget into law with a record 67 vetoes, preventing the enactment of multiple clauses that would have resulted in cuts or changes to public school funding.
Nearly all local school board members and district administrators shared concerns in the months leading up to the budget's passage about the multiple provisions billed as property tax relief that would have cut into public school funding.

MARIA STEIN - Salvage crews made a major breakthrough at the fire-ravaged St. John the Baptist Church when they unearthed the holy tabernacle containing the blessed sacrament, a top priority amid recovery efforts.

After cranes lifted out charred timbers from inside of the structure, officials Wednesday afternoon discovered the tabernacle in the apse, the domed area of the church where the altar once stood, according to the Rev. Ken Schnipke, pastor of the Christ Our Light Family of Parishes.

"The blessed sacrament was still inside the tabernacle, unopened, so that's the most sacred part," Schnipke told The Daily Standard.
