In a stunning vote, Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, marking a historic victory for progressive politics.
The 34-year-old democratic - socialist and now the city’s first Muslim and millennial mayor defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as a third-party candidate after losing the Democratic primary, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani’s win comes after a whirlwind year that saw him transform from a little-known state assemblyman into a national figurehead for the left.
His campaign galvanized young voters and working-class New Yorkers, centering issues like housing equity, police reform, and climate justice.
Congratulations, Mayor Mamdani!
