Tommy, Steven, Gerry and Addison lived in a small city about 40 miles
northwest of New York City. Merrideth had 25,000 people living there. The young
friend group had just graduated from Merrideth Middle School and their summer
had just started on Friday. On the beautiful Tuesday morning, the group planned
on riding on the bike trail that passed through town and connected to the
Appalachian Mountain Trail. They were hoping to find and discover a big
adventure, one that their wildest dreams could not have imagined happening that
day.
Since Friday had been their last day of school, they spent the weekend
getting their bikes ready for the big adventure this summer, where they planned
to ride the bike trail all the way to Pennsylvania—120 miles roundtrip.
They wanted to get into shape by making a few 20 mile workouts, and
figured they could easily do 10 miles an hour and complete the trip in 12 hours.
That’s when Tommy reminded the rest of them that they’d need to plan for
a few more hours to hang out in Pennsylvania.
Addison suggested they each bring a sleeping bag and camp out.
Steven didn’t think he’d be allowed to sleep out on the trail. “Besides guys,
“ he says, scared “it’s scary out there. You never know what could happen on the
trail.”
Gerry was laughing by now, knowing that none of the others have ever
tried to ride their bikes more than a few miles. He, on the other hand, had visited
his cousins in Ireland; they’d taken a 10 day bicycle trip to the great Southern
Trial, the Western Greenway, and some of the most awesome trails in the
national parks.
They’d been riding only a few hundred yards when Tom discovered a dead
dog on the side of the trail. It had no identity tags; it was a cute little fellow, and
couldn’t have weighed more than 10 or 15 pounds. He couldn’t have been there
very long, because even in the summer heat there were only a few flies around
and it didn’t smell too bad.
It was Tommy’s idea to bury the dog because he believed it would be good karma..........
