Thanks for all the love. I have been prospecting more and gathering more content. Stay tuned for more Colorado gold!!

Check out this piece of gold! It barely fit in my snuffer bottle. Colorado still has some chunky gold. 🤩

Be like the duck…

Before setting up to dig a new spot, stop and scan the water. Look for areas where the flow changes. You want to find that spot where the water goes from faster to slower. That’s where gold can accumulate.

That’s why inside bends and the areas behind large rocks are some of the main targets for prospectors. But don’t forget about the straight stretches of river. A change in water flow can create a trap for heavies almost anywhere.

I find pockets of gold in rivers that I know get hit often, and it’s usually because I’m thinking about water flow and old channels. These rivers have been moved and adjusted over time. Try to find places where the river hasn’t been altered much to accommodate roads or neighborhoods.

Find that spot where the heavies are dropping out of the flow.

The more testing and panning you do, the better you’ll get at reading a river. It really comes down to practice and lots of pans.

Mercury in the mat….

I posted this mat for sale online and I had someone tell me that the new owners of dream mat informed him that these original mats are made with some mercury in them?! What the…? Has anyone else heard of this?

I Spent a couple days up in the Colorado mountains running a 2 inch dredge and exploring some beautiful Colorado water. The dredge moves material fast, but finding gold still takes patience, observation, and plenty of time in the creek. Cold water, long days, and chasing that next good spot.

Adventure is the destination.

Those shiny gold colored specs are probably not free gold.

What you’re seeing here is gray copper minerals and chalcopyrite carrying values inside the ore itself. These minerals formed alongside the gold in the hydrothermal system deep underground millions of years ago.

This kind of ore is full of clues.

Gray copper- a term referring to tetrahedrite and tennantite group minerals, which are copper bearing sulfosalts. especially caught the attention of old timers because it commonly ran with strong gold and silver values in parts of Gilpin County.

Check the first comment.

I’m posting real mine data from 14 Gilpin County mines showing the gold and silver values found in associated sulfide minerals during the early mining days here in Colorado.

Some of the highest values were actually tied directly to the sulfides themselves.

That is gold.

Well technically gold, silver, and tellurium all locked together in the same crystal structure.

What you’re looking at here is Calaverite with some Sylvanite mixed in. These are gold tellurides, some of the richest ore minerals ever mined in Colorado.

See those tiny parallel lines running the length of the crystal?

Those are striations, one of the big clues prospectors look for when identifying Calaverite. The crystal habit looks very different once you know what you’re seeing. Almost bladed and streaked instead of the chunky look most sulfides have.

The wild part is the chemistry.

Calaverite can run around 40 to 45% gold by composition, sometimes higher depending on the material. Sylvanite carries both gold and silver along with tellurium. Ore like this helped build districts like Cripple Creek into world class gold camps.

A lot of this material confused early miners because the gold was tied up inside the mineral itself instead of showing as free milling visible gold in quartz.
